Sequim, Washington is located in Clallam County on the majestic Olympic Peninsula. Bordered by the Strait of Juan de Fuca to the north and the Olympic Mountains to the south, the city falls into a rainshadow and receives approximately 16 inches of rain each year, making it one of the driest places in Western Washington. With a population of 6,600 (per the 2010 consensus) Sequim is a small, active

community and a popular retirement community. Rich in agricultural heritage, for the past two decades Sequim has become internationally known for the commercial cultivation of lavender, making it the "Lavender Capital of North America." Sequim is also known for the berries and organic produce grown in the Sequim-Dungeness Valley and the local seafood and crab. Just two hours from Seattle, Tacoma and Olympia, Sequim and the surrounding Sequim-Dungness Valley are popular tourist destinations. The city is centrally located on the north Olympic Peninsula and is a great place to stay while enjoying everything the area offers.

Outdoor irrigation is a big use of water, so selective water use is critical in the warmer summer months. Try these water conservation tips:

Following the ebb and flow of the seasons, let your lawns go dormant in the summer, mimicking the golden fields we admire in nature. Golden is the new green! Protect dormant lawns by waiting until winter rains bring back the green-stop and start watering can damage grass plants.

If you do water, do it in the cooler parts of the day. Frequency depends on the soil; one inch per week is usually enough for our area. See how long it takes your watering system to fill up a 1 in. tuna can and then water that long once or twice a week.

As you plant gardens and landscaping, look for drought-tolerant plants, mulch around plants to keep soil moist, and set up effective watering systems to deliver moisture to roots.
Golden lawns and wise outdoor irrigation conserves water and money!
