Sometimes it's better NOT to leave your mark...💩

If you’re adventuring here or in other parts of the Seney National Wildlife Refuge where there's no toilet, please DON'T leave “surprises” for the next person.

Instead, DIG A HOLE 6" – 8” DEEP AND 200 FEET FROM TRAILS AND WATER. Do your thing, cover it up, and pack out your TP. Yes, your TP. No, the forest won’t “take care of it.”

Even better, go full-on “Leave No Trace” and pack out everything using a plastic 'wag bag’ and put it in a garbage can. Hey, if it’s good enough for your dog, it’s good enough for you! Click here for all the "Leave No Trace" principles. https://www.fws.gov/project/leave-no-trace-principles

On behalf of your fellow refuge visitors and Seney NWR staff, THANK YOU and HAPPY (clean) TRAILS

If you enjoy seeing and learning about Seney National Wildlife Refuge's iconic loons, don't miss Thursday's Loonapalooza Learning Series speaker. ALSO, the winner of the Jim Rutledge loon decoy will also be drawn. We hope to see you at the Pine Performance Center in Curtis!

Dani Fegan is Director of the Natural Resources Division for the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians and a Ph.D. candidate in Fisheries and Wildlife at Michigan State University. This summer, she has been closely following Seney’s loons, from nesting and chick survival to the challenges they face in a changing environment.

Come hear what she has learned September 3, 7 PM, at Erickson Center’s Pine Performance Center in Curtis. Free and open to everyone.

GETTING CLOSER: SENEY'S VISITOR CENTER PREPARES FOR 2027
This is an article from the most recent newsletter published by the Friends of Seney National Wildlife Refuge...

After years of planning, construction and anticipation, Seney National Wildlife Refuge has reached an exciting milestone: refuge staff have the keys to its new Visitor Center and Headquarters!

That doesn’t mean the doors are ready to open to visitors just yet, but it marks an important transition from construction toward turning the new building into a fully functioning home for refuge staff, volunteers and the public.

Friends and refuge volunteers recently had an opportunity to tour the completed building and get their first look at spaces that, beginning next year, will welcome thousands of visitors to Seney. The new facility replaces the visitor center and headquarters buildings that served the refuge for decades and were demolished as part of a larger modernization project.

The project was funded through the Great American Outdoors Act, which is helping the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service address deferred maintenance and aging facilities on public lands. At Seney, the work extends beyond the building itself and includes improvements to parking areas, the entrance road, the Pine Ridge Nature Trail, bridges & water control structures on the auto tour routes, and accessibility upgrades to the Show Pool access area. Federal project information lists nearly $14.9 million in Great American Outdoors Act funding for the overall Seney improvements.

Inside the new building, visitors will eventually find much more than a place to pick up a refuge map. The facility brings visitor services and refuge administrative offices together under one roof and includes a multipurpose room, conference space, small orientation theater and an exhibit area designed to introduce visitors to Seney’s wildlife, habitats, history and conservation work.

There is still plenty happening behind the scenes before those spaces can be put to use.

Office furniture is scheduled for installation in mid-August, followed by installation of the new visitor exhibits beginning in late September. Refuge staff must then move operations from the temporary facility on River Road into their new offices. Public access cannot begin until both contracts are completed and the move is finished.

For that reason, visitors will have to wait a little longer to see the finished product. The new Visitor Center is anticipated to open to the public for the 2027 visitor season, with May as the target. Until then, the temporary Visitor Center on River Road continues to serve visitors until October 20, when the season closes. Though the new building is still closed, the parking area, nature trail, pavilion and bathrooms by the fire tower are currently available for use.

For Friends of Seney, the opening will bring another long-awaited return. The Marshland Nature Store, which has been closed during construction, will have a new home in the building. Volunteers are anxiously awaiting the opportunity to greet visitors at the new information desk, helping them discover wildlife, explore the Marshland Wildlife Drive and make the most of their time at the refuge.

There is still work to do, but after several years of watching the new building rise from the construction site, having the keys in hand makes the finish line seem very close indeed.

Looks can be deceiving! A snag tree (a dead or dying standing tree) just might be one of the liveliest trees you could encounter. It provides shelter to dozens of cavity-nesting species, serves as a food source for insects and everything which feeds upon them, and enriches the soil to the benefit of plant life. This humble snag is one of the noblest things in the Seney NWR or in any forest!
