Leadership Selma-Dallas County is a community development program that was established to address a need to prepare committed individuals for growth and development opportunities, both personally and professionally in the heart of Alabama’s Black Belt. Founded in 1993 and endorsed by the Alabama Cooperative Extension System, Economic Development Authority, and the Selma/Dallas County Chamber of Co
mmerce, this 10-month, pragmatic community development and leadership training program introduces diverse, intelligent and driven people to learn more about themselves as leaders as well as palpable characteristics and aspects of the community they serve. Quality of life matters in our community are shown through site visits, presentations by corporate leaders, business leaders, political leaders, educators, healthcare professionals, etc. This program empowers local business and community citizens to strive to make a difference through action – rather than words alone. Group projects are decided upon collectively by each individual class, and these projects prepare students to translate their ideals into action for improving their own communities. Sixty-five students (25 adults and up to 40 youth) are chosen annually through a highly competitive selection process. They represent a broad range of racial, religious and economic backgrounds, ages, interests, and academic and work experience, but all share a commitment to excellence in and for Dallas County. The adult and youth programs operate on separate days though the format is similar for both programs, exposing them to a diverse cross section of the county.
