56 years ago, brave men and women marched across the Edmund Pettus Bridge fighting for the right to vote.
They were met by white police officers who brutally attacked the peaceful protesters.
Seeing these images in black & white creates the illusion this happened in a distant time and space.
No, this was just 5 decades ago. Not even 1 full generation.
Right here, on American soil.
Your parents and grandparents were probably alive.
Yet, Black people still find ourselves being brutalized by police as we peacefully protest systemic oppression and social injustice.
Ain’t s**t really change.
But today, we honor those foot soldiers who risked it all on because they recognized future generations were depending on their sacrifice and courage.
Let us March on til victory is won.

Yesterday, the House passed the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act.
So what does that mean?
The police reform bill would ban chokeholds and eliminate qualified immunity for law enforcement. It would also ban no-knock warrants, mandate data collection on police encounters, prohibit racial and religious profiling and redirect funding to community-based policing programs.
It’s the most ambitious police reform effort in decades.
But, the bill still needs to get through the Senate with at least 60 votes.
At the senate is currently 50-50, the democrats will need some republican support.
That means the democrats will definitely have to compromise on some of the more progressive aspects of the bill.
To put it simply, we still got some work to do! 💪🏽

We can’t rely on activists to carry the load. Achieving freedom and breaking down our nation’s systems of oppression requires all us to show up.

Whether it’s showing up to vote at the polls, donating to a nonprofit, or attending meetings held by your local government.

We ALL have a part to play.

Nexters: We need you to ROCK the vote today. It is Election Day for many states in America. Delaware does not have elections today BUT many other states are voting including New Jersey and Pennsylvania. NJ and PA are making some important decisions. This is a big election regarding criminal justice change. Many of the seats up for grabs today are the ones that create the laws and decide how people are sentenced. Know the candidates! In times such as this, you must know that you matter and your voice and collective action is the only thing that will change the world. All minorities-- brown people, women, millennials; all must to together to make overwhelming change. In 2017, we must do better than this. People are being hurt and killed because of what they look like or what they believe. We ask you to join the movement. Put your dollars and voice behind real change.
