This Memorial Day, Selma Unified students honored those who served our country through meaningful acts of remembrance and respect. 🇺🇸 Roosevelt Elementary 4th grade students continued their annual tradition of placing flags on veterans’ graves, while also learning how to identify veteran headstones and practice proper cemetery etiquette. Our Adult Transition Program students also spent time at West Cemetery placing flags in honor of veterans laid to rest there. Thank you to our students and staff for helping keep the spirit of Memorial Day alive through service, reflection, and gratitude.

Heartland High students are geared up for the future! 👏🔥 Congratulations to the graduates of the Wildland Firefighting Class, offered through Selma Unified’s partnership with Valley Regional Occupational Program. Through this hands-on course, students gained essential training, real-world experience, and industry-recognized certifications that can help launch careers with agencies such as CAL FIRE, the U.S. Forest Service, and the Bureau of Land Management. Students earned four National Wildfire certifications, including Introduction to Wildland Fire Behavior, Firefighter Training, Human Factors in the Wildland Fire Service, and Introduction to ICS/NIMS.

These certifications allow students to apply for seasonal and entry-level firefighting positions right after completing the program. Congratulations to the Heartland Wildland Firefighting graduates!

Art on display at Garfield Elementary! 🎨 Mr. Petersen’s 3rd grade class hosted their student art show, The Seasons of Art. Families and students came out to view the impressive collection, celebrating the many artistic pieces created throughout the year. These young artists explored art and history in meaningful ways, and students even had artwork previously featured at the Fresno Discovery Center. Students were proud to share their artwork, and many even said art is their favorite subject! Thank you to the Fresno Arts Council and art teacher Mrs. Rosas for for providing this opportunity and supporting our students’ creativity.
