Volcanic conduits, i.e., diatremes, are dynamic, explosive environments with coursing magma, gases, steam, and magmatic and phreatomagmatic explosions. Their final geometry is a confusing mixture of layered tephra, hydrothermal breccias, and clasts big and small of crustal rocks as illustrated in
this magnificent large-scale geologic portrait of the face of Round Butte, a Miocene-age diatreme of the SE part of the Hopi Buttes volcanic field, Navajo Nation, Arizona.

The illustration below, “Geological map of the cliffs in the south part of Round Butte (location in Fig. 2) displaying the three main facies groups. Note the truncated invasive columns (non-bedded pyroclastic rocks), the unconformity, the discordant contact (onlap) between the undisturbed and the disturbed bedded group just above the bTBl facies. For facies codes, see Tables 1 to 3.” From Latutrie and Ross (2019), ‘Transition zone between the upper diatreme and lower diatreme: origin and significance at Round Butte, Hopi Buttes volcanic field, Navajo Nation, Arizona’. tinyurl.com/RoundButte-HVF

Tiny but colorful Bluethroats nest in the Alaskan Arctic, then make their way back to Asia in the winter. Only a handful of birds are known to make this journey.

Alaska's Western Arctic is often called "America's Bird Basket", attracting countless waterfowl, shorebirds, and raptors. But this beautiful & biodiverse area is threatened by the Willow Project, the largest single oil drilling project proposed in the U.S.

Tell President Biden, stop Willow before it's too late: https://ejus.tc/3AiVmo4

Its giant, chubby appearance is due to a self-defense technique in which it inflates itself with air in order to look more formidable when it feels in danger. The species of the frog is the Blunt-headed Burrowing Frog, also called Glyphoglossus molossus.

Wow!

On September 10th I was joined by 10 people at the V Bar V. You know it's a great morning when 12-15 Coatimundi pass over your head on a vine! And the birds were fantastic too! Excited to join their first field trip ever were three new birders. A light rain fell which not one person complained about. It cooled off the morning and brought out the birds. Early on we had a "a strand of silky flycatchers" - Phainopepla. We saw a nest they used during the summer. They have two broods per year and leave this area to breed in their other habitat - both in the same year. The area's One-seed Junipers are beginning to provide fruit for most of the 40 species we saw. We had fun discerning the different species with crests: Juniper Titmouse, Northern Cardinal, and Phainopepla. But the real stars of the show were the 12-15 Coatimundi - babies and adults! Notable was the lack of warblers - they have largely gone South and we look for their return by the festival time next year.
