Harvest For Hope of Skagit County Washington

Harvest For Hope of Skagit County Washington Gleaning is an ancient practice dating back thousands of years. Gleaning can also include the sorting and collecting of food from “cull bins”.

Harvest for Hope is designed to increase the supply of fresh produce to local food banks and hot meal programs through the process of on the farm gleaning. We will accomplish this through Harvest for Hope volunteers who will harvest and transport the donated produce at your farm to our Food Bank Distribution Center once it is gleaned. The practice of gleaning consists of collecting crops from a

farmer’s field that were missed during a commercial harvest, or harvesting crops that are not economically viable for a farmer to harvest. These bins contain food that physically does not meet market standards (to small, to big, not the right color) but which is still perfectly edible. Many ancient cultures promoted gleaning as a way of supporting those in need in their communities, and it is a practice which still continues to this day.

Upcoming Glean:

Roger Bryn has opened up his rhubarb patch to us for a glean. We will be headed out to his place (15656 La Conner Whitney Rd., La Conner, WA 98257) for some outdoor fun on Wednesday May 22 at 10am. For those in Anacortes we can get everyone together in one car if you're available. Everybody else can meet at Community Action in Mount Vernon at 9:30 if you want to car pool; I'll be there with the brown van as a rally point. I'm not sure what the weather will be like, but be sure to wear layers and rain boots if it is wet.

April 24th at 1pm there will be a gleaner meeting here at the Distribution Center. Everyone is welcome to come by and meet to plan for this growing season.

03/18/2013

Hello All,

I hope you had a comfortable Winter. My name is Cole and I have taken the Harvest For Hope coordinator position for this year. Luckily we will still be able to work with Mary some as she is heading up the Garden of Hope this year.

We at the Skagit Food Distribution Center in Sedro-Woolley will be holding a volunteer appreciation month in April. If possible it would be great to have you out to chat over a warm drink and tour the Distribution Center. We will have open hours for volunteers to drop by every Tuesday in April, as well as the 8th-11th all between 9:00 am and 4:00 pm.

I was hoping to hold a gleaner specific meeting either the 24th or 25th of April to get feedback and start to coordinate availability for gleaning. Please let me know when you have availability.

I look forward to meeting you all.

Cheers,

Cole Bitzenburg
