In March, we sent a group of girls to the All Femme Film Festival during the annual NFFTY (National Film Festival for Talented Youth) conference in Seattle. While there, the girls got one on one time with 18 different industry professionals to discuss future careers and how they can improve their craft. Kaleah Westergarde earned an Honorable Mention for her film, "Help Me Eli." Congrats Kaleah!

It's competition season so students are hard at work readying their photography and films for submission to various festivals around the state. Stay tuned for more of their work soon!

Today Mrs. Wesen's CTE Agricultural Biology students had class outdoors! They had the opportunity to visit land owned by Hampton Lumber and land managed by the Washington Department of Natural Resources (DNR). Students learned from professionals in the forestry and natural resources industries about their careers, the science behind what they do, and how we can be better stewards of the land. Thank you so much to the Hampton Lumber Team and the DNR Team for taking your time to teach us today, we had a great time 🌲

Agricultural Biology class is part of the CTE AG Pathway towards graduation and meets two requirements; CTE and Science. Next school year, CTE will be offering a new course to the pathway, Natural Resource Science.

In January, our Cascade Middle School CTE Computer Science students had an exciting opportunity to visit Western Washington University’s Computer Science program. During the visit, students tackled challenging computer science puzzles that pushed them to collaborate, think critically, and use strategic problem-solving skills.

Students also toured the Robotics Lab, where they learned what truly makes something a robot and explored three impressive projects currently being developed by WWU students: air (drones), land (wheelchairs that map terrain), and sea (a specialized underwater Roomba). Each project highlighted how computer science is being used to solve real-world problems and improve our world.

Students also explored the power of artificial intelligence, learning how AI can be used in positive and impactful ways. They discussed strategies for protecting their own information, spotting mistakes and bias in AI systems, and using these tools responsibly and beneficially.

One of the highlights of the day was watching a live drone demonstration, where drones flew in precise patterns that were fully coded by WWU students. To wrap up the visit, CMS students heard from a panel of current WWU students and asked thoughtful questions about why they chose computer science, why college matters, and which projects they were most proud of working on.
