Happy 1st day of Spring ๐ŸŒธ

Spring has sprung here at Slide Rock! ๐ŸŒธ We are so excited for our apple trees to look like this soon. Todays' Spring equinox signifies the end of Winter, and the beginning of Spring in the Northern Hemisphere. The sun passes exactly over the Equator, making day and night nearly equal lengths. In several cultures the Spring equinox marks the beginning of a New Year.

How will you spend your first day of Spring? ๐ŸŒ…

Did you know that the Pendley homestead was powered by a flume?

Shortly after Frank Pendley established the homestead, he encountered a problem: how can water be transported from the creek to the orchards? ๐ŸŒฒ

At first, he filled buckets and carried them uphill himself. Once that got tiresome, Frank used the masonry skills he learned while working on the Roosevelt Dam to build a flume in 1910. This flume took two years to construct and starts one mile north of Slide Rock. It involves a series of suspended metal flumes that travel through various tunnels of which he excavated himself ๐Ÿงจ. This diverted water was carried to the Pendley Ditch, which is still used today to water the West and Experimental orchards.

This flume also leads to the old pump house, which is accessible in the creek area just North of the main slide and was used to generate electricity to the homestead. Next time you're visiting the park, keep an eye out for these expansive flume tunnels!

Here at Slide Rock, we can see from the Schnebly Hill Formation to Kaibab Limestone, capped with a layer of Basalt. Throughout the next few weeks we will be highlighting the different rock layers at the park. ๐ŸŒ„

Starting from the bottom, the Schnebly Hill Formation is characterized by its bright red, sandy look. It was formed 285-280 million years ago from wind, alluvial, and sea deposits. During this time, the region was under shallow water. Imagine a beach: think about the shallow, sandy area just offshore. Now imagine the sand being deposited there for millions of years. Thatโ€™s essentially how the Schnebly Hill Formation was formed!
