A message about E-bikes from HCSO:

E-bikes: Know the rules and ride safely

E-bikes are becoming very popular, and it is important for everyone to know the rules regarding them and, most importantly, to ride them safely.

Under Florida law, e-bikes that have pedals are considered bicycles and must follow the same traffic rules as a bike without a motor, although there could be some exceptions in some areas. No license, registration, or insurance is required as long as your bike meets Florida's legal definition of an e-bike (it must have operable pedals, the motor must be under 750W, and the maximum speed is 28 mph assisted).

Know your class: There are three types of e-bikes. Class 1 and 2 max out at 20 mph, Class 3 goes up to 28 mph, and requires you to be at least 16 years old to ride. Your bike should have a label showing its classification, top speed, and motor wattage.

New rules (effective July 1): Senate Bill 382 adds pedestrian-focused safety rules. When riding on shared paths, you must yield to pedestrians and give them an audible signal before passing. On sidewalks or pedestrian areas, you can't exceed 10 mph if a pedestrian is within 50 feet.

Where you can ride depends on your class: All classes are allowed on public roads. Multi-use trails generally allow Classes 1 & 2. Class 3 is often restricted on shared paths in some areas, but not in Highlands County. Always check local ordinances before you ride.

Ride safely: From 2017–2022, e-bikes were linked to 53,000 ER visits and 104 deaths nationally. In 2022 alone, 24,400 ER visits were reported. Higher speeds mean longer stopping distances and more severe crashes.

If you have an e-bike, please ride safely and follow the rules. We would urge parents to make sure their children are old enough to ride responsibly before letting them hit the streets on an e-bike.

Coyotes are a natural part of Florida's wildlife and can be found in urban, suburban, and rural communities—including right here in Sun 'n Lake. While coyotes generally avoid people, they can become a danger to pets if they begin associating neighborhoods with food and lose their natural fear of humans.

To help keep both residents and wildlife safe:
🐾 Never feed coyotes. Feeding wildlife is illegal and teaches coyotes to seek food from people.

🗑️ Remove attractants. Secure garbage cans, bring pet food indoors, and pick up fallen fruit from your yard.

🐕 Protect your pets. Keep cats indoors when possible and always walk dogs on a short leash. Do not leave pets unattended outdoors, especially during dawn, dusk, or nighttime hours when coyotes are most active.

🏡 Stay alert. If you see a coyote lingering near homes or showing little fear of people, make loud noises, wave your arms, and maintain a safe distance to reinforce their natural wariness of humans.

Coyotes play an important role in Florida's ecosystem, but coexistence depends on preventing them from becoming comfortable around people. By removing food sources and supervising pets, we can help reduce conflicts and keep our community safe.

☀️ School’s out, and we know many kids and teens are spending more time outdoors enjoying summer break.

As a reminder, the Sun ‘n Lake Golf Club is a private recreational facility and is not open for general recreation or public access.

For everyone’s safety, the following activities are not permitted on golf course property:
• Walking or jogging
• Riding bicycles, scooters, skateboards, or other recreational devices
• Operating motorized vehicles (including electric bikes and similar devices)
• Walking pets
• Recreational use of cart paths
• Accessing or operating private golf carts on golf course property
• Fishing in golf course lakes, ponds, or water features
• Any unauthorized entry onto golf course grounds

While the golf course may appear open, active golf play, maintenance equipment, irrigation systems, and turf management operations create potential safety hazards for anyone not authorized to be on the property.

We ask parents, guardians, and young residents to help us keep everyone safe by respecting these restrictions and staying off golf course grounds unless participating in authorized golf activities.

🏊‍♀️ Temporary Weekend Pool Access Update 🏊‍♂️

To keep everyone safe and ensure a good experience while we're operating under current capacity limits, the Parks & Recreation Department will be making a temporary change to pool day pass sales.

Beginning Monday, June 8, non-resident pool day passes will no longer be available on Saturdays and Sundays. Non-residents may continue to purchase pool day passes Monday through Friday.

Weekend day passes (Saturday and Sunday) will be available only to Sun ‘n Lake residents. Proof of residency must be presented at the time of purchase.

We understand this change may be disappointing for some visitors, and we sincerely apologize for any inconvenience. This is a temporary measure that will remain in place until the completion of our new pool facility, which will allow us to increase capacity and better accommodate residents and guests alike.

Thank you for your patience and understanding as we work to expand and improve our aquatic facilities for the community.
