The Democratic Women’s Club of Highlands County was chartered in 1996.

The Democratic Women's Club of Highlands County, Florida, is chartered by the Democratic Women's Club of Florida (DWCF), a statewide group of approximately 3500 plus politically active, diverse women (and men - we don't discriminate!) We are also part of DWCF Region 10 with Manatee, Sarasota and Charlotte Counties.

Join us for pancake breakfast at HQ this Saturday, June 6th (between 9:00 AM and 1:00 PM). Proceeds are to benefit local candidates.

We currently have 2 DWC members running for office.

Savannah Casto is running for School Board, District 5. She's the only Democrat running (although it's a "non-partisan" race). One of her opponents has ties to charter schools, which courtesy of Florida's voucher program, have diverted tens/hundreds of millions of dollars from our public schools. The other candidate (who just announced this past weekend is Andy Tuck.
Savannah's campaign needs to raise $1700 just to get her name on the ballot. Please help if you can.

Leigh Estes who spoke briefly at our last DWC meeting is running for FL state legislature. She has just launched her campaign and could use our support.

We encourage you to join Public Funds Public Schools on Tuesday, May 12, at 2 p.m. ET for a timely webinar on the expansive role of dangerous and unregulated scholarship granting organizations (SGOs) under the federal school voucher schemes.

With the program projected to funnel tens of billions of federal tax dollars through SGOs to vouchers, this webinar will highlight how these organizations have repeatedly been shown to lack adequate accountability and transparency leading to significant waste, fraud, and abuse of public funds. SGOs also heighten the risk of discrimination against students and families with their broad discretion over who receives a voucher. The panel will discuss why the growth of SGOs under the federal voucher scheme is yet another reason states should reject the program and instead use public funds to support and strengthen public schools.

The Democratic Women’s Club of Highlands County extends its deepest sympathy on the passing of Nina J. Shuman. Nina’s legacy lives on through her unwavering commitment to education and opportunity. Together with her partner, Cynthia Schumacher, she established a DWC scholarship to support young members pursuing higher education.

Through their generosity and vision, many lives were enriched and futures strengthened. Nina’s dedication to learning, civic engagement, and the growth of our DWC community will be remembered with gratitude and respect.

✨ Equal-a-Tea 2025 was a success! ✨

On August 23rd, the Democratic Women’s Club of Highlands County gathered at the historic Jacaranda Hotel to honor women’s suffrage, enjoy good company, and raise support for our ongoing work.

🍵 Guests sipped tea, shared finger foods (with delicious scones baked by one of our own!), and even received a commemorative pin symbolizing the 1920 milestone of women’s right to vote. A suffragist performer brought history to life, while “Pick-a-Prize” tables added fun and fundraising flair.

💙 Thank you to everyone who joined us for this joyful celebration of community, history, and progress. We can’t wait to see you at next year’s Equal-a-Tea!
