We share the following letter penned by USA School District and the Tuscola County Prosecutor's Office for 6-12 graders regarding the increase in threatening incidents.
Dear Students,
In an effort to be proactive and preventative, we would like to share the following information with you.
As a result of the horrific violence that occurred in Oxford, there will be changes in how issues involving threatsare handled, no matter how specific or vague those threats are.
Moving forward, any and all threats of violence will be investigated for possible criminal charges by local lawenforcement. In addition, any student suspected of making a threat will be screened and assessed by schooladministration for possible disciplinary action such as suspension and/or expulsion.
Once local law enforcement completes the criminal investigation, it will be forwarded to the Huron or TuscolaCounty Prosecutor’s Office for review; and if warranted, appropriate charges will be filed in a court of lawagainst the student.
Students making verbal or written statements, or physical gestures of violence, in addition to school sanctions, may also be charged and prosecuted in a court of law.
Furthermore, students making statements that could cause panic and/or terror will be investigated by lawenforcement and may be charged and prosecuted in a court of law, in addition to any school sanctions.
Please do not take your words and actions lightly. They may have consequences beyond what you imagine.
For example under Michigan Law, anyone who commits a false report or threat of terrorism is subject topenalties that include up to 20 years in prison and/or a $20,000 fine as well as reimbursement of expensesincurred from the violation. Likewise, using a computer to commit a crime in certain instances may also result
in a 20 year maximum penalty.
It is important to note that students who lie to police officers conducting a criminal investigation can be subjectto penalties up to 4 years in prison and/or a $5000 fine.
Students found to have made a threat may face serious school consequences as well.
If you have any concerns or apprehensions please come to the office and ask to talk to one of our school socialworkers who are here to help.
If you have knowledge of or see evidence of someone expressing violence or anger towards another pleasereport that concern to school officials or law enforcement. If you wish to remain anonymous you can reportthrough OK2SAY via phone: 855-565-2729, text: 652729, or email: [email protected]
Please note that you will likely see a stronger law enforcement presence around the schools for the
foreseeable future. A police officer in the building doesn’t necessarily mean something bad is happening or hashappened. It may just mean that law enforcement is looking out for all of us.
We are reviewing our safety plans and our safety protocols to ensure your safety. We care deeply about eachand everyone of you, and we vow along with law enforcement to do our best to protect you from harm.
Sincerely,
Josh Hahn Mark Reene
