HISTORY OF THE SEBEKA POLICE DEPARTMENT

IN 1898 THE CITY OF SEBEKA WAS INCORPORATED. G.

PRIOR TO THAT, LAW ENFORCEMENT WAS OFTEN THE TASK OF THE SHERIFF. THE OFFICE OF CONSTABLE WAS AN ELECTED POSITION IN MANY TOWNS UP UNTIL THE MIDDLE OF THE TWENTIETH CENTURY. THE CONSTABLE WAS RESPONSIBLE FOR KEEPING THE PEACE AND LAW AND ORDER IN A TOWN OR TOWN SHIP. WHEN SEBEKA BECAME INCORPORATED, THE POSITION OF CONSTABLE WAS CREATED. THERE WERE TWO CONSTABLES IN SEBEKA AND THEY WERE ELECTED ON

OTHER HISTORY

IN THE EARLY YEARS THE CITY OF SEBEKA DID NOT PROVIDE ANY KIND OF UNIFORM OR VEHICLE, THE CONSTABLE USUALLY USED WHAT EVER HE HAD THAT LOOKED DECENT OR WORKED UNTIL ABOUT THE 1930’S. FIRE ARMS USED BY THE CONSTABLE WAS WHATEVER PERSONAL FIRE ARM THEY HAD. THE LIST OF EQUIPMENT IS LOST TO TIME BUT ONE OF THE FIRST CONSTABLES DELL ROBINS OR R.G. MAYNARD ALLEGEDLY WALKED AROUND TOWN WITH AN 1897 WI******ER PUMP SHOT GUN, A LEATHER SAPP AND A PAIR OF DARBY HAND CUFFS. VARIOUS OTHER OFFICERS USED WHAT THEY HAD OR BORROWED INCLUDING A NINE SHOT H&R 22LR PISTOL FOR DUTY. THE CITY OF SEBEKA PROVIDED ITS OWN JAIL AT THE TIME AND HAD TWO CELLS WITH A WOOD STOVE IN THE OLD FIRE HALL; IT WAS DISCONTINUED IN THE 1950’S. ACCORDING TO ACCOUNTS, THE FIRST CITY OWNED PATROL CAR WAS A 1961 PONTIAC TEMPEST. LATER CARS INCLUDED A 1970’S CHEVROLET NOVA,
VARIOUS FORD LTD’S AND CROWN VICTORIA’S. IN THE 1980’S THE DEPARTMENT HAD A 1983 AND 1987 CHEVROLET CAPRICE. IN THE 1990’S THE DEPARTMENT HAD A 1990 AND 1996 CHEVROLET CAPRICE. IN THE 2000’S A 2004 AND 2006 DODGE INTREPID. IN THE 2010’S A 2006 INTREPID AND A 2011 FORD CROWN VICTORIA. DEPARTMENT PATCHES WERE GENERIC CONSISTING OF AN EAGLE OF SOME KIND. IN 1959 THE DEPARTMENT PATCH CHANGED TO THE SCHOOL MASCOT CONSISTING OF THE HEAD OF A TROJAN. IN THE EARLY 1980’S THE DEPARTMENT WENT BACK TO A GENERIC EAGLE PATCH. IN 1985 THE DEPARTMENT WENT TO A SHIELD PATCH WITH THE CITY SLOGAN AND THE STATE OF MINNESOTA IN THE CENTER. IN 2007 THE DEPARTMENT CHANGED AGAIN TO A SHIELD STYLE PATCH WITH THE STATE SEAL IN THE CENTER. IN 1990 A NON PUBLIC LOGO WAS ALSO USED FOR OFF DUTY WEAR ONLY. THE V & I STANDS FOR “VINCO INVICTUS” LATIN FOR “DO THE IMPOSSIBLE”.
