While winter and Christmas are often difficult for our members as they present emotional and situational triggers for people in recovery, this holiday season we did not have a single
program member experience relapse. We thank God and are proud of our members’ fortitude in continuing on their journey of recovery.

This season has also brought loss to our Matt Talbot family. Long-time friend of the Center Patty Turnberg passed away in January, a loss deeply felt by our staff and members alike. We celebrate her life while mourning her passing and hold her loved ones in our prayers.

In brighter news, Phase I of our Facilities Remodel Project is near completion. We hope to have you join us for a Dedication and Open House this spring.

Know that we are so grateful for the blessing of your prayers, and your encouragement. Know also that your financial support is helping us save lives, reunite families, and restore faith. Please continue to keep us in your prayers and your giving.

Many of our program members are working toward completing GEDs, Associate’s, Bachelor's, and other degrees and on getting jobs or other opportunities. Laptops are a critical tool in enabling them to take these steps. If you are interested in donating laptops for our program members or know of an organization, business, or individual who would like to support our work in this way, please email [email protected] for more info. Thank you!

“Some other programs are so fast-paced that you forget to love yourself, which was the case for me. Matt Talbot was the first time that I really felt like what I wanted mattered.”

Shawn has dealt with substance use for thirty years of his life, having started using at age eleven. His path to recovery serves as a testament to the power of determination and the courage it takes to transform your life through hard work, community, and a commitment to change. Today, Shawn has his own apartment and looks forward to starting a new job. Reflecting on his path to recovery, Shawn shares that there was a time where he struggled to find success and even feared finding success without happiness, but that now he’s putting in the work to improve his life and is building confidence. When asked if there’s anything he’d like to share about MTC, Shawn said, “I know this program sounds like a lot to commit to, but it’s worth it to take the time on yourself. A lot can happen in a year.”

We are so proud of Shawn and grateful for his dedication and meaningful contributions to our community. Thank you for being part of ensuring that MTC members like Shawn are able to build lives where they’re happy, safe, and thriving! Shawn’s full story was featured in our last newsletter—to hear more stories like his and stay in the loop about our work, email [email protected] to be added to our mailing list.

Last weekend we had two outings: Recovery Day at the Mariners on 9/15 and a trip to the Puyallup Fair! We are so grateful for the chance for MTC members and staff to bond and relax together. Thank you to everyone who supports our outings fund for making these moments of joy and recovery in community possible!

(Please note that when we don’t have photo consents in place for all members on a given outing, we don’t post the group photos in order to respect their privacy. This was one of those times, so we hope you enjoy seeing a couple of our wonderful staff members instead!)

Help us celebrate Recovery Month this September by making a gift to the Matt Talbot Center. Recovery Month was started as a celebration of the recovery community and to help spread awareness about substance use disorder and mental health issues. This month is a reminder that people can and do recover, mental health matters, and we can work together to make recovery possible in all its forms. Our courageous program members show us what it means to live in recovery and strive for the best for themselves and their community every day. Your donation uplifts MTC members and alums in every phase of recovery and provides them with vital services, wraparound care, and hope. Donate at mtcseattle.org/donate.

“It’s nice that as bad as things were, that things can get better if you try. When I was at my rock bottom, I had no place to go and no one trying to help me out…Now, I have my own apartment. I’m in permanent housing and it’s so serene. I’m grateful for my housing, and excited about the future and the things I’m finally focused enough to try to do. I have a lot of dreams.

[Matt Talbot] was like a breath of new life into my lungs. They put me in a position where I can succeed and go back to school now, start to look at my future...[God] brought me to a place where people really care and I really care about them. They work with you and they do what they say they’re going to do if you do what you say you’re going to do. I appreciate them for that because they’re saving lives here. You guys that donate to MTC, you’re helping the people that help us…and everything’s appreciated. They use a lot of resources for us and are really good about trying to get us the things we need. We appreciate you guys for donating, to us, basically. We were the forgotten ones for a second there, and they showed us they’ll never forget.”

We are so grateful to Derek for sharing a bit of his story with our supporters, and for the kind, supportive presence he brings to the MTC community. Thank you for helping equip Derek and others like him with the support they need to thrive!
