Serving up some action for Hunger Action Month! 🧡🍽️

September is Hunger Action Month, a nationwide campaign to raise awareness about hunger and inspire people to take action in their communities.

At University District Food Bank, action takes many forms. Today, it looks like Sonya serving up fresh meals in our Apple-a-Day Café. 🥗

Want to take action with us this month?

🧡 Volunteer your time
🥕 Donate food or host a food drive
💛 Give to help keep fresh, healthy food on our shelves
🤝 Get involved with one of our community events
📣 Spread the word and help others learn about food insecurity

Ready to take action? Visit udistrictfoodbank.org to find ways to volunteer, donate and get involved.

Throughout September, we’ll be sharing more of the people, programs and community partners that make our work possible, along with ways YOU can take action.

Because ending hunger takes all of us. 🧡

We LOVE berry season! 🫐🍓

Yesterday, Hayton Farms delivered this incredible batch of locally grown blueberries, strawberries and blackberries to our Food Bank.

Purchasing from local farmers means we can offer our customers beautiful, fresh, seasonal produce while also supporting Washington growers. And really, nothing makes our customers happier than seeing produce like this on our shelves!

Berry season, you’re our favorite. ❤️

Every year, we survey our shoppers to better understand their needs and priorities. Their feedback helps shape the decisions we make every day.

This year, again, the message was clear:

🥬 Fresh produce topped the list.
🥩 Meat came in second.
🥚 Dairy and eggs, pantry staples, and culturally familiar foods also ranked among the most requested items.

These are the foods we work every day to keep on our shelves because they're the foods our community tells us they value most.

The reality is that they're also some of the hardest foods to keep in stock. Meat and eggs are only available every other week rather than every visit, and our shelves can look very different at the end of the day than they do first thing in the morning.

Every donation helps us purchase the foods our shoppers tell us they need most—bringing us one step closer to making this wish list an everyday reality.

Thank you for helping us listen, respond, and provide food that nourishes our community with dignity and choice. ❤️

Last week, we introduced our Shopper Advisory Council. Today, we'd like to introduce the two people who help bring it to life.

As Pantry Coordinators, Tiffany and Jordan facilitate the Shopper Advisory Council, creating space for shoppers to share ideas and helping ensure their feedback informs decisions at the food bank.

Beyond the council, they support customers and volunteers every day, helping create a welcoming environment where everyone feels valued.

Thank you, Tiffany and Jordan, for the care, leadership, and dedication you bring to our community. ❤️

Thank you to Residence Inn by Marriott Seattle U District for supporting this year's Take a Bite Out of Hunger Auction!

Auction donations are what make our event so much fun—and so successful. We're currently looking for travel experiences, restaurant gift cards, sports tickets, theater tickets, wine, vacation stays, and other unique experiences.

Business sponsorships are also a meaningful way to support our work while connecting with our community. Interested?

We'd love to hear from you!

Who knows how to improve the food bank best?

Our shoppers!

Last year we launched our Shopper Advisory Council, bringing together customers who meet monthly to share ideas, identify challenges, and help shape the future of University District Food Bank. Their feedback has already led to meaningful improvements—from adding a microwave for shoppers to creating a culturally relevant holiday food calendar to improving the area outside our building.

We aren't just serving our community—we're learning from it every day. Thank you for helping make programs like this possible.
