Akin Children’s Home Society of Washington and Childhaven have merged to form a new organization, Akin. Learn more: www.akinfamily.org

While our name is changing, what remains constant is our commitment to families, caregivers, parents and children. At Children’s Home Society of Washington, we aim to offer holistic support and reach our families before they are in crisis, to identify their unique needs and set them up with resources and prevention services to manage life’s challenges at a time when additional support is needed mo

st. Our four core service areas include:

• Early learning: ensuring children have the strongest possible foundation to thrive during a critical period of their development
• Parent & family education: equipping parents with the resources to support their children through every stage, milestone, and challenge
• Behavioral health & counseling: giving parents and children the tools to address behavioral health
challenges, building on each family’s strengths
• Family reunification: offering mentorship and support for parents whose children are temporarily in foster care, so they can move toward nurturing strong, life-long families

This is just a snapshot of the support we provide to families in need. Through the pandemic, we have been nimble in our approach to continue offering support in a virtual capacity, knowing additional resources and care can make the critical difference between “I’m in crisis” and “I am going to be OK.” Because when we start with family, we all succeed. If you are in need of support – reach out. You can help us continue our important work in serving families in Washington state today with a gift. www.childrenshomesociety.org/donate.

June is National Reunification Month — a time to honor families who overcome incredible challenges to reunite with their children and repair, together. At Akin, we know that family is the foundation of a child’s well-being, and we’re honored to walk alongside parents to support their reunification journey with the help of our (P4P) Parents for Parents program.

Partnered with parent allies - parents who have successfully navigated the child welfare system to reunify with their children - parents new to navigating the system receive invaluable mentoring, tools, hope, and a path to reunification.

Akin team members traveled to D.C. to attend the annual National Family Support Network Member Convening and Advocacy Days May 18-21, with a mission to visit seven of the 12 members of Congress from Washington state, focusing on advocating for Family Resource Centers (FRCs) and family support practice locally in WA state, as well as the forthcoming Family Prosperity Act, a piece of legislation that would create the nation's first ever flexible funding line specifically for Family Resource Centers.

Additionally, networks from across the country met to share best practices, build compelling narratives of the FRC story, explored collaboration opportunities, and worked with researchers from Casey Family Programs and the Annie E Casey Foundation on deepening the breadth of knowledge of and resources needed to run successful FRCs.

Thank you to our advocacy team, partners and community for raising critical awareness and funding in support of family wellbeing in Washington state.

Here at Akin, our therapeutic care and counseling services focus on Early Relational Health and Family Support principles and include dyadic, family, and/or individual counseling in addition to peer support services, depending on each child and family’s unique needs.
