Incredible work by U.S. Coast Guard Air Station Astoria and Mason County Sheriff's Office who conducted a challenging rescue in Olympic National Forest on Sunday evening!

A U.S. Coast Guard MH-60T Jayhawk aircrew from Air Station Astoria worked with the Mason County Special Operations Team to rescue a 51-year-old and 16-year-old hiker on Mount Elinor in the Olympic National Forest. The hikers were in an avalanche chute, and ground crews were unable to hike them out on foot.

The Coast Guard aircrew carefully hoisted both individuals from the mountain and transported them to Olympia Regional Airport where Tumwater Fire Department was standing by!

This successful rescue was a fantastic team effort by, Mason County Search & Rescue, Mason County Sheriff’s Office, Tumwater Fire Department and Olympic Mountain Rescue!

While most people were with friends and family this past holiday season the U.S. Coast Guard and U.S. Army were busy training together on the Columbia River near Astoria, Oregon.

The Sentinel-class USCGC Florence Finch’s crew participated in fast rope and hoist training using a rescue basket with the U.S. Army 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment (SOAR) “Night Stalkers”.

The Night Stalkers are the U.S. Army’s elite helicopter force for high risk nighttime special operations. They utilize the MH-60M Black Hawk and MH-47 Chinook helicopters for training and missions world wide.
