Advocacy often begins with someone choosing to speak from lived experience. A story about navigating housing, protecting family, accessing resources, or imagining something better can spark conversations that move communities forward. When people speak up about what they have seen and lived through, systems become more responsive, more accountable, and more rooted in real community experience.

Your voice matters in shaping what equitable policies and stronger neighborhoods can look like. Take a few moments to share your perspective through the survey on this link https://byrdbarrplace.org/for-the-record. Every story shared helps build a clearer picture of what our communities need and deserve.

Have you ever shared your story to advocate for change? What did that experience teach you?

We offer essential services — food, shelter, warmth and financial tools — for neighbors in Seattle to build stability and self-sufficiency.

Leadership is often measured by direction, but its impact is felt in how people experience change. When leadership is grounded in community listening, responding, and staying accountable it creates space for growth that reflects real needs. It’s not just about where we’re going, but how we move together to get there.

What does community-centered leadership look like in action? Share your thoughts or experiences below.

Stability often comes down to the everyday things we might take for granted. Keeping the lights on. Keeping your home warm. Energy assistance helps create that foundation so families can focus on what’s ahead, not just what’s urgent.

Why do you think access to basic needs like heat or electricity matters beyond the moment? Share your perspective.

With our offices closed today in observance of Memorial Day, we’re taking a moment to look back on the joy, connection, and community care shared during our recent Community Health and Wellness Fair. From movement and wellness activities to conversations between neighbors and community partners, the day was filled with moments that reminded us what it means to care for one another in community.

We saw families connecting, elders sharing wisdom, young people showing up with curiosity and energy, and community members making space for rest, learning, and celebration together. Thank you to everyone who joined us and helped create such a welcoming and uplifting day. We loved sharing this space with you and cannot wait to do it again. 💙

What was your favorite moment from the event, or what does community wellness look like in your life?

Every policy, every system, every decision touches real people and communities hold deep knowledge about what works. At Byrd Barr Place, advocacy begins with listening, really listening to lived experience and community insight.

When community voice leads, solutions grow from real conditions, real priorities, and shared vision. That’s how change becomes lasting, rooted, and shaped by the people closest to it.

When have you felt truly heard in a space or conversation? What made that experience different?

Today, Byrd Barr Place is closed in observance of Mental Health Day. We are taking time to honor rest, reflection, and the importance of emotional well-being for our staff, community, and loved ones.

Mental health is part of how we move through the world, care for one another, and stay connected during difficult and joyful moments alike. Healing can look different for everyone, but none of us are meant to carry everything alone. Community care, trusted relationships, rest, and moments of peace all matter.

As we pause today, we invite you to spend time with the people, places, and practices that help you feel grounded.

Financial coaching doesn’t start with numbers. It starts with a conversation.

What are you carrying right now? What are you hoping for? From there, a plan begins to take shape. One that reflects real life, not a template.

We’ve seen people move from uncertainty to clarity, not because everything changed overnight, but because they no longer had to figure it out alone.

What has shaped the way you think about money or financial stability? Share a lesson or experience that’s stayed with you.

There’s something powerful about choosing to show up for your community.

Volunteers bring consistency, care, and presence, whether it’s helping distribute food or supporting an event. Those moments may seem small, but they create something larger: a stronger, more connected community.

What does showing up for your community look like for you right now? If you’re looking for a place to start, consider volunteering with us.
