Hi everyone,
My name is Naomi Snow and I serve as the ASUW President. I am writing because students across the country, especially low-income, working, and first-generation students, are at risk of losing critical support.
The Fiscal Year 2025 Budget Reconciliation Bill has passed the House of Representatives and is now moving to the Senate. This bill includes some of the most severe proposed cuts to student aid in recent history.
If passed, it would:
• Eliminate subsidized undergraduate and Grad PLUS loans
• Cap financial aid based on a national median cost rather than actual college expenses
• Impose new Pell Grant restrictions that most current recipients would not meet
• Cut an estimated 698 billion dollars from Medicaid and 267 billion dollars from SNAP and EBT
• Set a 200,000 dollar lifetime cap on federal student loans, including Parent PLUS
• Eliminate most income-driven repayment plans and deferments for hardship
These changes would make college harder to afford and complete, and would disproportionately harm students already navigating financial barriers.
This is a priority for ASUW. We are committed to protecting students and have created a centralized hub with tools and resources to help you take action.
