Volunteer registration is open for the Show Up Seattle! Day of Service on Saturday, Sept. 26! Events are located across the city with activities ranging from neighborhood clean-ups and beautification, to trail maintenance and garden parties. There is something for all ages, abilities, and interests. Roll up your sleeves, connect with neighbors old and new, and show some love for our city!

This summer, 22 community-led projects received grants from the Neighborhood Matching Fund (NMF) by the Seattle Department of Neighborhoods (DON). The NMF supports grassroots projects that build stronger communities, such as neighborhood improvements, cultural celebrations, and youth programs.

We’re proud of our partner Seattle MLK, Jr. Organizing Coalition for being among the 22 recipients of the NMF during the first granting cycle! Through this funding, they’ll expand youth internships with stipends, ensure accessibility, and cover essentials like permits, safety, printing, and equipment as they work toward the 44th Annual MLK Jr. Day in 2027. Congratulations! 🎉💚

We recently caught up with Francesca Murnan (Shawnee and Cherokee), former Indigenous Advisory Council Liaison (IAC), to learn more about what drew her to DON, her role in launching the IAC, and fostering relationships between Native leaders and local government. We want to give a big shout out to our 2024-2026 Seattle Youth Commissioners! These dynamic teens have worked with City and State officials to bring a youth voice to issues like mental health, public safety, and climate action. Thank you to Mayor Katie B. Wilson, Council President Joy Hollingsworth, and Councilmember Maritza Rivera for joining us in celebrating the accomplishments of this commission and to our incredible SYC liaisons, Rosa and Najma, for supporting their work. The future is bright!

On August 18, community members and City officials, past and present, filled the Seattle City Council Chambers to celebrate the official proclamation of Allynn Ruth Day, honoring her 51 years of public service at the City of Seattle. Allynn began her career at the City of Seattle in 1975 and has been with the Department of Neighborhoods since it was established in 1991. Over the years, she has overseen more than $10 million in community investments as a project manager for the Neighborhood Matching Fund and Food Equity Fund.

Her dedication to community support and empowerment extends well beyond her work at the City of Seattle. Allynn has sat on the board for the Roosevelt Alumni for Racial Equity - RARE, served as president of the Smilow Rainier Vista Boys & Girls Club - SRV, and mentors’ youth as a Sunday School teacher.

Thank you, Allynn, for your unwavering dedication to community building and public service! We can truly say people like you make our department, our city, and our world a better place.
