🍡 Have you tried yokan? This traditional Japanese jelly confection has a fascinating history stretching back over a thousand years, originally starting as a meat-based soup before Zen monks transformed it into the sweet adzuki bean treat we know today. From classic red bean blocks to chocolate, ch*****ne, and dried fruit varieties, yokan keeps reinventing itself. It is even being used as an emergency food and a sports energy snack.

On September 9, Acting Consul General Tsuge and colleagues received a guided tour of the Bainbridge Island Japanese American Exclusion Memorial from The Hon. Clarence Moriwaki, Mayor of the City of Bainbridge Island.

Following the signing of Executive Order 9066, the 276 Japanese American members of Bainbridge Island’s tight-knit community became the first people of Japanese descent in the United States to be forcibly removed from their homes and relocated to incarceration camps in March 1942. The Memorial, which features a 276-foot wall bearing the names of the forcibly removed residents, honors the perseverance and courage of these Japanese Americans.

Thank you very much to Mayor Moriwaki for hosting us and providing a thorough overview of Bainbridge Island’s rich Japanese American history.

Education Officer Sakomoto and Consulate staff took a tour of Nintendo of America’s headquarters and received a briefing from Dylan Rhoads, Technical Program Manager, Strategic Initiatives.

Nintendo was founded in Kyoto in 1889 by Fusajiro Yamauchi, who began manufacturing hanafuda cards.

Thanks to the global success of Super Mario Bros., the company became widely recognized as a developer of video game consoles and software, and today it is one of the world’s leading gaming companies. While Nintendo is primarily an entertainment company, many of its products are also used in educational settings, and numerous games promote interaction among families and within local communities.

We are proud of the efforts Nintendo is making to connect people around the world.
