This is the official, public page of the Seattle City Council. The Council is committed to ensuring that Seattle is safe, livable and sustainable.

These nine Councilmembers are elected to four-year terms in nonpartisan elections. 7 members represent a geographic district, and 2 members represent the entire city, elected by all Seattle voters. The City Council approves the City's budget, develops laws and policies that promote the health and safety of Seattle's residents and oversees the City's police, fire, parks, libraries, and electric, wa

We had a 🐾 'pawsome' guest in the chamber this week as Seattle councilmembers proclaimed April 30, 2026 to be National Therapy Animal Day!

"We encourage our citizens to celebrate our therapy animals and their human handlers. We publicly salute the service of therapy animal teams in our community and in communities across the nation."

Today at City Hall, councilmembers joined legislative department staff and wore denim with a purpose.

On Demin Day, we stand together as a visible means of protest against the misconceptions that continue to surround sexual violence and to raise awareness.

As the longest-running sexual violence prevention and education campaign in history, Denim Day asks community members, elected officials, businesses and students, and all individuals to make a social statement with their fashion statement by wearing jeans on Denim Day.

Today, the City Council proclaimed May 1 as “International Workers’ Day,” recognizing the impact of workers, in Seattle and globally, to drive positive change in their communities.

“Seattle’s labor movement represents workers all across our local economy, from public sector workers to building trades union members, service employees to maritime workers, organizing for more just fair and equitable working conditions . . . May Day is both a celebration and a call to action — a recognition that while Seattle has made meaningful progress, the struggle for worker justice is ongoing.”

Seattle councilmembers proclaimed April 11–17, 2026 as Black Maternal Health Week and honored leadership of Black birth workers and community organizations, including Good Black Birth Initiative, who are advancing culturally grounded care, advocacy, and birth justice at the state and local level.

This week "serves to center the lived experiences of Black families and the community-led practices essential to ending the maternal health crisis; and...all Seattleites are encouraged to learn from Black families to understand what it means to protect the safety, sanctity, and joy of the Black birth experience."

Yesterday, Seattle councilmembers honored the incredible resilience of the local Cambodian community by recognizing the Khmer Rouge genocide which occurred 51 years ago.

“The City of Seattle has served as a sanctuary and home for Khmer refugees... supporting Khmer Americans in rebuilding their lives, preserving their cultural identity..."
