Reserve History | Nurses Week | LT Sarah Josephine Griffin

Navy Reserve nurse Lt. Sarah Josephine Griffin brought something rare to her patients at Naval Hospital Oakland. She knew exactly what they were going through.

Recalled to active duty during the Korean War, Griffin was assigned to the Rehabilitation Center at Naval Hospital Oakland, California, where she worked with veterans who had lost limbs and were learning to use prosthetics. Griffin herself had lost her lower left leg in an accident prior to her recall. She did not let it keep her from the uniform, and she did not let it keep her from the work.

The 1951 photograph shows Lt. Griffin assisting an injured Korean War veteran as he learns to use his two prosthetic legs. It is one of the most quietly powerful images in the Navy's historical record.

This is what Navy Reserve nurses have always brought to the mission. Not just clinical skill, but the kind of hard-won perspective no classroom can teach.

This Nurses Week, we honor Lt. Griffin and every Navy Nurse who has answered the call.

Experienced physicians often tell me they assumed military service had to happen earlier in their career. In many cases, that is not true. The Navy Reserve continues to seek qualified doctors who want to serve part-time and bring years of experience to the mission.
