Stay Safe from Online Scams!
Online scams are increasingly sophisticated. Scammers may pretend to be government agencies, tech support, banks, delivery services, or even people you know. Protect yourself and your loved ones with these key tips:

🚩 Common Signs of a Scam
* Unsolicited messages or emails asking for money or personal info.
* High-pressure tactics: ā€œUrgent,ā€ ā€œAct now,ā€ or ā€œLimited time only.ā€
* Requests for payment via gift cards, cryptocurrency, or wire transfers.
* Links to fake websites or attachments that contain malware.
* Offers that sound too good to be true—they usually are.

āœ… How to Protect Yourself
* Verify sources: Don’t trust caller ID or email addresses alone. Contact the company or person directly through official channels.
* Don’t click suspicious links: Especially from unknown senders.
* Use strong, unique passwords and enable 2-factor authentication.
* Update your software regularly to patch security holes.
* Report suspicious activity—don’t just ignore it.

🚨 If You’re a Victim
1. ā€œBeat It.ā€ Stop communication with the scammer immediately.
2. Report the scam:
* In the U.S., visit reportfraud.ftc.gov
* For identity theft: identitytheft.gov
3. Notify your bank and freeze your credit if needed.
4. Change passwords for affected accounts.

If you become a victim of identity theft:

Contact your local Police Department (see local agencies phone numbers below) and file a report. A police report is critical in helping victims get rid of fraudulent debts and clear up their credit reports.

Seminole PD, Gaines County Sheriff, and Seagraves PD: 432-758-9871

Notify banks, creditors and utilities. Close accounts that have been used by thieves. Choose new passwords and PINs for all of your accounts and don’t use your Mother’s maiden name as a password.

Notify merchants that issued credit or accepted bad checks in your name. Use your police report or FTC affidavit as a backup.

Call the toll-free number of any one of the three major credit bureaus to place a fraud alert on your credit report. Fraud alerts can help prevent an identity thief from opening additional accounts in the victim’s name.

As soon as the credit bureau confirms the fraud alert, the other two credit bureaus will automatically be notified to place fraud alerts, and all three credit reports will be sent to the victim free of charge.

Close accounts that you know or believe to have been tampered with or opened fraudulently. When disputing new unauthorized accounts, many banks and creditors will accept the ID Theft Affidavit provided by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), which will save you valuable time in the recovery process.

File a complaint with the FTC or call 877-IDTHEFT (877-438-4338). Consumer complaints help make a database a better resource for law enforcement officers.

Download a copy of Take Charge: Fighting Back Against Identity Theft, from the FTC Website that tells you how to minimize the risk of, and recover from, identity theft.

For fraud involving stolen mail, also file a complaint with the US Postal Service.

Order your credit report each year. Get credit reports from all three credit bureaus and study them closely. Some victims say that it took them years to clear their credit files and that new credit was sometimes granted in their names without their permission even after fraud alerts were placed on their accounts.

Today, the Seagraves Police Department pauses to honor and remember the brave men and women who gave their lives in service to our nation. Their sacrifice is the reason we enjoy the freedoms we have today, and we are forever in their debt.

As we gather with family and friends this Memorial Day, let’s not forget the true meaning of this day. It's more than just a long weekend — it's a time to reflect, to give thanks, and to pay tribute to our fallen servicemembers.

To all who have served, are currently serving, and especially to those who never made it home — we remember you. We honor you. We thank you.
