United Neighborhood Centers of Northeastern Pennsylvania Nonprofit social service agency in Northeastern Pennvylania
www.uncnepa.org

UNC’s beginnings date back to 1923, when members of the Bethel Church opened a small settlement house in center city Scranton to serve the needs of the African American community. In 1924, another settlement house opened to serve the new immigrant populations living in the Lower West Side of Scranton. These two independent centers merged in 1970 to form United Neighborhood Services, later renamed

United Neighborhood Centers of Northeastern Pennsylvania. UNC continues to embrace the settlement house vision to aid in the solution of problems at the neighborhood level. MISSION: To work together with neighbors to provide services and create opportunities that empower individuals and build strong, interdependent communities. VISION: To address emerging social needs and be an innovative leader in building strong interdependent communities based upon our traditional commitment of partnering with individuals, families and neighborhoods. UNC is proud to be an independent member agency of the United Way of Lackawanna & Wayne Counties, Alliance for Strong Families and Communities, Housing Alliance of Pennsylvania, National Low Income Housing Coalition, and Housing Coalition of Lackawanna County.

On Friday, we were proud to celebrate the official ribbon cutting of the newly renovated Angel’s Attic Food and Clothing Pantry, made possible through the hard work and generosity of the Leadership Lackawanna Core Class of 2026, with additional support from a Lackawanna County Re-Invest Program grant that helped fund the cost of the new flooring.

Angel’s Attic serves hundreds of individuals and families each week, providing access to food, clothing, and essential items during times of need. Thanks to this partnership, the space has been transformed into a more welcoming, boutique style environment for the neighbors we serve.

The Leadership Lackawanna team worked incredibly hard to bring this project to life, helping renovate the pantry with new flooring, clothing racks, shelving, merchandising displays, and a refreshed waiting area with chairs, side tables, and décor.

We are so grateful to the Leadership Lackawanna Core Class of 2026 for investing their time, talents, and energy into a space that means so much to our clients, staff, and community. We are also grateful to Lackawanna County for its support through the Re-Invest Program, which helped make these important flooring upgrades possible.

Thank you to everyone who contributed, donated, volunteered, and supported this project. Your work will have a lasting impact on the families and individuals who walk through our doors.

Congratulations to one of our outstanding graduates!

Damaris has been involved in United Neighborhood Centers Youth Programs for the past three years, where she built friendships, confidence, and lasting memories.

She credits Jay and JC as two of the most influential people in her life, helping her come out of her shell, try new things, and embrace being herself without fear of judgment. She also thanks her mom for always providing guidance, support, and encouragement.

Her advice to younger students: "If you think you don't have it under control, you do. Just take a breath and handle things one step at a time. Don't let anything get in the way of your success."

After graduation, Damaris is looking forward to attending Marywood University and beginning her journey toward a career as an animator or visual novelist.

Congratulations on this incredible achievement, Damaris! We can't wait to see where your creativity takes you. 🎉💙

Congratulations to one of our outstanding graduates!

Jay has been involved in United Neighborhood Centers Youth Programs for five years and has also participated in Band and Drama Club at West Scranton High School.

She credits her family as the most influential people in her high school journey. Their love, support, encouragement, and belief in her helped her overcome challenges and become the person she is today.

Her advice to younger students: "Don't be afraid to get involved and try new things. High school goes by much faster than you think, so make memories, meet new people, and take advantage of the opportunities you are given."

Some of Jay's favorite memories include bringing her friends to the program and sharing those experiences together, as well as attending the end-of-the-year trips.

After graduation, Jay will attend Empire Beauty School to study cosmetology. Her goal is to become a cosmetology teacher and inspire future students the way her teachers inspired her.

Congratulations, Jay! We wish you all the best as you begin this exciting new chapter. 🎉💙
