The Salvation Army Scranton Citadel Corps

The Salvation Army Scranton Citadel Corps We provide food assistance through our food pantry and our monthly choice food distributions. At Christmas, we assist families with children (up to age 14).

Motivated by God’s love, serving our by meeting the physical and spiritual needs without discrimination for a 140 years and counting in the Scranton area. The Salvation Army Scranton Citadel Corps began over 139 years ago, the mission is the same as it was then: serving our Scranton area community, and providing for the physical and spiritual needs of our community without discriminati

on. We would not still be here without the support of our Scranton area community, and we continue to alleviate the needs of our neighbors who are food insecure, living on fixed incomes, and who fall on hard times every so often: loss of income, reduction in income, and unexpected financial burdens. We provide financial assistance for utilities by administering UGI’s Operation Share and Pennsylvania American Water’s Dollar Energy grant programs. We also work with UGI, Pennsylvania American Water, PP& L, and Pennsylvania Utility Law Project and host Customer Assistance Events where neighbors can come and meet with representatives to get assistance or sign up for customer assistance programs and LIHEAP, LIURP, and LIWAP. We provide gifts, toys, and pajamas or clothing, as well as stocking stuffers through our Christmas Assistance Program: Angel Tree, Adopt A Family, and Sheetz 4 Kids. We have youth music & art programs for school-age children, and healthy snacks and meals are provided during those programs. We also work to make summer camp available and accessible to children in our community at Camp Ladore in Waymart, PA. We visit our neighbors who reside in local assisted living facilities at least twice a year, bringing them friendly smiles and small gift remembrances. We provide weekly opportunities for service, fellowship, worship, and education for women (age 16 & up); and a weekly opportunity for service and fellowship with our men's club (age 16 & up). We also have discipleship classes for children, teens, and adults who are seeking to learn more about God and grow in their faith journey, on Sundays and throughout the week (see our schedule). The current officers (pastors/administrators) are Captains Kirsten & Neil Childs who were appointed in June 2022. There are 2 dedicated full-time staff, an Office Manager and a Property Manager; and volunteers who diligently work in mission to provide for the needs of our neighbors in need throughout the year.

What happens when a community opens the Book of Romans together? At The Salvation Army Scranton Citadel Corps, a weekly Bible study is helping participants wrestle with questions about sin, grace, temptation, and spiritual transformation. As they journey through Paul's words, many are discovering that they are not alone in their struggles and that God's grace is greater than their past. As we continue serving our community in the 141st year of our ministry in the Scranton area, we pause to thank God for the opportunity to walk alongside our neighbors in times of need. ❤️

From October 1, 2025, through June 18, 2026, The Salvation Army Scranton Citadel Corps has opened 1,112 cases and served 1,023 unduplicated households through practical assistance, compassionate care, and community support.

📊 Ministry Impact:
🥫 568 households received groceries through our Choice Food Pantry
💡 695 households received utility assistance
🏠 32 households received housing assistance
🤝 49 households received case management services
🔗 1,066 referrals were made to community resources
👕 Clothing assistance was provided as needed

Through 4,508 interview sessions, our team has had the privilege of listening, encouraging, praying with, and assisting individuals and families facing challenges.

Together, we have served:
👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 738 family households
👩 219 women
👨 115 men
🧒 1,211 children under age 18
🧑 1,382 adults ages 18–59
👵 449 adults age 60 and older

This ministry is carried out by a small team of just two staff members, dedicated volunteers, and two Salvation Army Officers. Through God's provision and the faithful support of donors, volunteers, community partners, and friends, lives are being touched every day.

As we look ahead, our commitment to serving the Scranton area remains strong. These statistics do not include our Christmas Assistance Program, which provided additional support to families during the holiday season. They also represent only a portion of the ministry taking place through The Salvation Army.

➡️ In the months ahead, we will continue meeting critical needs through our Choice Food Pantry, utility assistance, emergency rental and housing assistance, case management, referrals, and spiritual care.

🏕️ We are also excited to send approximately 40 young people from our community to summer camp, where they will experience adventure, friendship, personal growth, and the love of Jesus Christ in a life-changing environment.

These numbers are more than statistics—they represent people, families, stories, struggles, victories, and hope. Every conversation, every referral, every grocery order, every utility payment, and every child sent to camp is an opportunity to share God's love in practical ways.

Thank you for helping us continue to meet human needs in His name without discrimination as we move forward together in Year 141 of ministry in the Scranton area. ❤️

📖✨ **Verse of the Week | Versículo de la Semana** ✨📖

“Wait for the Lord; be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord.”
— Psalm 27:14 (NIV) 🙏💙

When life feels uncertain, remember that God's timing is perfect. Trust Him, stay strong, and take courage—He is always at work, even when we cannot see it. 🌟🕊️

“Espera al Señor; sé fuerte y valiente. ¡Sí, espera al Señor!”
— Salmo 27:14 🙏💙

Cuando la vida parezca incierta, recuerda que el tiempo de Dios es perfecto. Confía en Él, mantente firme y cobra ánimo; Él siempre está obrando, aun cuando no podamos verlo. 🌟🕊️

This version is engaging, encouraging, and works well for a church or Salvation Army audience.

Bloom where you are planted 🌸 This past Tuesday our women’s ministry turned simple supplies into a beautiful welcome—bulletin boards filled with Scripture, encouragement, and reminders of God’s love.

Small acts of service done with big hearts can brighten someone’s day and point them to Christ.

Grateful for hands that serve and creativity that worships.
