In February, quick action by employees at Rummel Construction’s Scottsdale shop helped save a coworker after he collapsed and stopped breathing. Jonathan “JJ” Jones, Nelson Palacios and Andreas Pena Maldonado immediately began CPR and called 911, providing lifesaving care until firefighters arrived and restoring a heartbeat.
Although Martin Lopez later passed away on Feb. 27, Scottsdale Fire recently recognized the employees and Rummel Construction’s safety director during a June staff meeting for their response and commitment to workplace safety.
Their actions underscore the importance of bystander CPR and stepping in during emergencies while first responders are en route.
Thank you to Scottsdale Fire for their continued commitment to supporting lifesaving training, preparedness and our community!
In February, Martin Lopez, a welder, collapsed and stopped breathing at the Rummel Construction shop in Scottsdale. Thanks to the quick actions of Jonathan “JJ” Jones (Equipment Supervisor), Nelson Palacios (Welder), and Andreas Pena Maldonado (Mechanic), Martin received immediate medical attention. Nelson and Andres began chest compressions while JJ called 911, and they worked together until emergency responders arrived. Their lifesaving efforts had a direct impact in getting Martin's heart going on its own again.
Sadly, Martin passed away on February 27.
Even though the outcome was not as everyone would hope, Scottsdale Fire recently celebrated the culture of safety built at Rummel Construction. The trio, as well as the safety director Matt Crosby, were recognized at the company's June staff meeting to reinforce the importance of getting involved to assist in emergencies while waiting for firefighters to arrive.
Thank you, employees of Rummel Construction. We appreciate your swift and selfless actions to save a co-worker. We hope this inspires others to be heroes, too!
