At last night’s Governing Board Meeting, we were proud to recognize Eric, a junior in the International Baccalaureate program at Desert Mountain High School, for earning the Congressional Award Gold Medal, the highest honor Congress bestows on civilian youth.

Through more than 425 hours of volunteer service, Eric has made a lasting impact in his community. As the founder of Students for Shelter, he leads efforts to support individuals experiencing homelessness by organizing donation drives, serving meals, and connecting people with critical resources.

Eric’s leadership extends beyond service. He has founded math clubs at Title I schools, mentored international STEM scholars, and developed innovative tools to help nonprofit organizations expand their reach and effectiveness.

Eric truly represents the best of SUSD, demonstrating service, leadership, and a commitment to making a difference.

Congratulations to Arnav Hingorani, Lukas Burgan, Levi Gerken, and instructor Michael Knight of Desert Mountain High School for taking first place in the Arizona Track I High School Competition of the Presidential AI Challenge!

Their project, Artificial Intelligence Recognition, stood out among more than 2,500 submissions, earning them a spot as one of just 328 state-level winners nationwide and one of only seven teams in Arizona.

Next up, they will advance to the Regional Competition, where they will present their work live and respond to questions from a panel of judges as they compete against top teams from across the region.

All participants will also receive a certificate from the White House, making this achievement even more memorable.

We are proud of these students for pushing the boundaries of innovation and representing their school and community at the highest level.
