Effective child protection depends on specialized, trauma informed expertise.

Counselors at the Childhelp National Child Abuse Hotline are extensively trained in crisis intervention, risk assessment, emotional regulation techniques, and safe reporting guidance. Counselors undergo a minimum of 40 hours of training and pass a competency assessment before working their first official shifts. 

Their role goes beyond listening. They help stabilize high risk situations, provide emotional support, and guide individuals toward next steps that prioritize child safety and wellbeing.

With expertise in child welfare and trauma informed care, every response is structured, informed, and compassionate, ensuring every caller feels heard, supported, and protected.

Abusive head trauma is a serious and often life threatening form of child abuse that occurs when an infant or child experiences violent shaking or forceful impact to the head. The developing brain is extremely vulnerable to injury, and the effects can include permanent brain damage, seizures, vision loss, developmental disabilities, emotional trauma, and death. Survivors and families are often left navigating lifelong physical, emotional, and psychological challenges.

The story of Dawn McCoy is a painful reminder of the lasting impact abuse can have on a child, their loved ones, and an entire community. Conversations surrounding child abuse must be approached with compassion, accountability, and a commitment to prevention, education, and survivor support.
