PREPARING STUDENTS FOR THE GLOBAL STAGE Black Mountain Elementary School serves students in grades Pre-K through 6th. Mr.

Located in North Scottsdale, BMES is proud to be the choice of families throughout Maricopa County. Black Mountain Elementary School focuses on the whole child, developing academic, social and emotional, and other skills needed for future success through purposeful and well planned school-wide programs. As a Kids at Hope and Love and Logic based school, BMES finds its success through a solid found

ation of relationships. BMES teaches social and emotional skills through the globally recognized Second Step curriculum. Additionally, BMES cultivates creativity, communication, collaboration, and other future ready skills as an Arts School, where all students participate in ongoing and well structured arts opportunities in Visual, Musical, Dance and Drama classes. The unique aspect of Black Mountain is in how we meet the needs of all learners. We offer a single-grade classroom structure. We have high academic expectations for all students. We focus on the high proficiency levels of the Arizona State Standards through the use of Beyond Textbook and our highly collaborative work environment. Black Mountain is fortunate to have an extremely active parent group and we encourage volunteers to support our school. We are an arts and community minded school and our PTO has been instrumental in the full realization of our programs, culture, and climate. Our Parent Teacher Organization sponsors family oriented events from Grandparents Breakfast, Science Night, Give Back event, Festivals, and more. All parents, grandparents and guardians are general members of our PTO. In addition to these wonderful community building opportunities, our PTO helps to supply our classrooms with amazing learning materials and technology while funding our Drama and Dance programs and more. The strength of our school is also reflected in the high retention rate of our dedicated and caring staff. Black Mountain is a close knit community and a happy place to be! Black Mountain Elementary ... where we prepare students for the global stage. More information on Love and Logic:

Love and Logic® is a method of working with students which was developed by educational expert Jim Fay, child psychiatrist Foster W. Cline, M.D. and Charles Fay, Ph.D. Love and Logic has many tools for educators, principals and districts that promote healthy parent/teacher and teacher/student relationships and positive school wide discipline. And yes, Love and Logic works along with all other school discipline programs. It actually makes them work better! Love and Logic helps educators, administrators, and counselors:
•Set limits in the classroom without anger
• Provide underachievers hope and willingness when the going gets tough
• Raise the odds for kids to stay in school
• Build strong connections between home and school
• Improve attendance
• Manage disruptive students
• Make teaching and learning more fun and productive
• Immediately handle disruptive students
• Get and keep students' attention
• Build positive student-teacher relationships
• Help students own and solve their own problems
• Bully proof children, diffuse power struggles, and handle difficult people

It works because:
•When adults take care of themselves, they hand the problem back to the student who created it.
• When the student has to solve the problem, they have to think.
• When students have to think, they learn that decisions have consequences.
• When students have to deal with consequences, they learn to think.
• When we allow the student to deal with the consequences, they learn to think before they cause a problem.
• When the student learns to ask themselves, "How is my behavior going to affect me?" they have learned self control. Learn more about our Black Mountain Elementary Principal, Matt Owsley. Owsley's Education:

Personal:
I was born and raised in Arizona to parents that valued hard work and education. Just like my three brothers and two sisters, I graduated from Moon Valley High School and spent much of my life participating in sports. After graduating from college, I married my high school sweetheart and have been smiling ever since. We have two wonderful boys, a beautiful daughter, and goldendoodle that keep us extremely busy, but I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Dear Cave Creek Community,

Last week, I shared why I am so optimistic about the future of CCUSD and Black Mountain Elementary School. That optimism is based on people.

Schools become extraordinary when extraordinary people choose to invest their lives in children. They choose to care deeply. They choose to serve something bigger than themselves. They choose to show up every day believing that every child deserves our very best. They choose to stay. That has always been the story of Cave Creek. That has been the story of BMES.

One of the reasons I am so excited about next year is because of the people who continue to choose Black Mountain. The people who stay. The people who believe in our values. The people who see this work as more than a job. The people who wake up every day determined to make the difference in the lives of children.

As we have worked to fill a few openings for next year, we have been incredibly intentional. We have met some truly remarkable candidates, and I could not be more thrilled about the amazing people who have already chosen to join our team. They are talented, passionate, caring, and deeply aligned with who we are and what we believe.

At the same time, we still have a few very important positions open, and I am hopeful that our Cave Creek community will answer the call the way it always has.

We are currently interviewing for:

• General Education Teacher: https://ccusd93.schoolspring.com?jobid=5766405
• Resource (Special Education) Teacher: https://ccusd93.schoolspring.com/?jobid=5669078
• Special Education Paraprofessional: https://ccusd93.schoolspring.com/?jobid=5736791
• Lunch/Recess Aide (11:00 AM–1:05 PM, Monday–Friday): https://ccusd93.schoolspring.com/?jobid=5677707

If you know someone who believes in kids, values relationships, and wants to be part of a school community that is always striving to do what is best for children, please encourage them to apply.

The future is bright because of the people who choose to build it.

If you have questions or would simply like to learn more about BMES, I would love to connect. [email protected]

A message from Mr. Owsley-

Dear Cave Creek Community,

Summers offer a chance to reflect, to dream, to adjust, and to design. As a sort of base camp, summer is another opportunity for clarity, planning and preparation to close the gap between the ending of one year and the vision for the future, to ensure that we reach the summit. It is with this reflection and a thoughtful eye on the future that I write this.

For over fifteen years, my heart has found its home at the base of Black Mountain. Serving as the principal of Black Mountain Elementary School is one of the greatest blessings of my life, a calling that shapes every decision I make for our children. I want you to know, deeply and clearly, that I am here for the long haul. There is something profoundly beautiful about staying, about planting your feet in the soil you know and tending it with hope. Real growth does not come from endlessly searching for greener fields. It comes from nurturing the ground beneath us until it blooms. I carry a deep pride in choosing to stay, and I know I am surrounded by others who feel the same. People deeply committed to our children, our schools, and the community we are honored to serve.

One of the greatest strengths of a district like ours is that we are small enough to truly know one another. Here, our students are not anonymous faces passing through a system. They are known not just by name, but by heart. There is an overwhelming sense of joy and purpose when I watch our littlest students step onto this campus for the very first time, and an even greater pride as I watch those same children grow, eventually walking across the Cactus Shadows High School graduation stage, and charting their paths into the world beyond. Because I care so deeply about their lives, I care infinitely about the future of CCUSD. Fueled by this passion, I will continue to work tirelessly, pouring everything I have into ensuring that what comes next for our district represents the absolute best years for our kids.

When I walk the hallways of Black Mountain, see our amazing teachers impact the lives of our students, and welcome our amazingly supportive community and families into our campus, I am looking at the very soul of Cave Creek. I see a living, breathing continuation of a long, beautiful tradition of generations of families who love their children fiercely, and neighbors who gather to build milestones out of hope. Our history is the steady heartbeat of who we are today, and it is the absolute promise of what we will achieve tomorrow.

Our story first began along the dusty trails of early Cave Creek many years ago, in 1886. Our foundation was a single, one-room wooden schoolhouse, built to serve a small handful of homesteading and ranching families. As the geography of our town shifted and grew, that little schoolhouse was moved three different times. It was a nomadic testament to a community determined to keep education exactly where its families needed it most.

In 1913, the district was forced to close its doors. Yet, that challenge only revealed the enduring landscape of Cave Creek’s character. Resilience is woven directly into our DNA. By 1930, the community rose up, fueled by an absolute, collective hope. Neighbors joined hands, rebuilding the school entirely with their own donated labor and materials, ensuring the light of education would burn bright for generations to come.

From a one-room schoolhouse to one of Arizona’s highest-performing school districts, our story has always been about a community that came together for our children. As our town grew, so did our promise, creating more space to learn, more opportunities to thrive, and a future built on heart, hope, and an unwavering commitment to kids. When you look back at that journey, you should feel a deep, overwhelming pride in Cave Creek. The exact same spirit that animated those early settlers, the grit, the unconditional love, and the absolute determination to lift up our youth, is the very same spirit alive inside you and me in this moment.

Recently, we have felt history mirror those early days. We have navigated our own school closures, structural shifts, and elements of change. Yet, our history leaves us an inspiring, comforting blueprint. Every time we face a challenge, it becomes the exact moment where this community steps in to dream bigger, lean closer into one another, and build back stronger, more resilient, and more vibrant than ever before.

My confidence in our future is unwavering because I witness the pure dedication that blankets our district every single day. We are surrounded by countless teachers, staff members, and leaders who choose to stay right here, anchoring our schools with their passion. They pour their entire hearts into our kids and stand firmly by them year after year. Over the decades, incredible educators have built a foundation of pure love and legacy here.

And now, I am deeply blessed to walk this path alongside amazing, passionate leaders, and am incredibly fortunate to welcome Dr. Regan to walk alongside us with her wealth of great experience. After spending time with her, I have full, sincere confidence in her leadership, in our returning staff, and in the bright, hopeful vision we are bringing to life together.

Just like in 1930, we need your hands and your hearts. Our community is, and has always been, the beating heart of our schools. We are carrying a sacred torch passed down by the ranchers, homesteaders, and neighbors who carved this district out of the desert with their own two hands. We are a district grounded in purpose, defined by connection, commitment, and collaboration. Through conviction, dedication, and true partnership, we control what happens next.

I look ahead with nothing but joy, profound hope, and an absolute belief in CCUSD and this community. My life remains dedicated to this work, to our schools, and to your children. Thank you for standing with us, for loving our schools, and for helping us shape a future for Cave Creek that is our brightest, happiest, and most beautiful yet. The best is truly yet to come.

A message from Principal Owsley:

Dear Bobcat Families,

I cannot believe another school year has already come to an end. While I have already been hard at work preparing for next year and dreaming about how we can make it the best yet, this time of year always brings reflection and gratitude.

I am so incredibly proud of our students and so thankful for the amazing adults who surround them every day. Our staff and parents have helped create a school filled with love, support, growth, and opportunity, and our kids are better because of it.

As I reflect on this year and the journey of our students, here are a few thoughts from my heart:

One of the greatest blessings of being a principal is getting to watch our students grow through some of the biggest moments of their young lives. From Kindergarten Graduation, where nervous first-day students become confident learners, to the 5th Grade Final Walk as they prepare to leave elementary school behind, to seeing our former Bobcats return years later for their high school graduation, each moment carries so much heart and meaning.

Kindergarten Graduation:
https://youtu.be/g6_9DvQXWcw?si=CP9ZIey8CjsPCozy

It feels like just yesterday they were walking onto campus for the very first time, beginning one of the biggest milestones of their young lives. And now, they are big first graders, confident, connected, believing in themselves more, and ready for what comes next.

5th Grade Final Walk:
https://youtu.be/hDZY2ZshWd4?si=vCzGHh9FZ6oxCEMZ

As the school year comes to a close, our 5th grade students take one final lap around campus. Our final walk is a special tradition filled with smiles, memories, and heartfelt goodbyes. It’s a chance for them to celebrate the friendships they’ve built, the teachers and staff who have supported them, and the school community they’ve called home for so many years.

While it’s never easy to say goodbye, we are incredibly proud of all they have accomplished and excited for the journey ahead. We can’t wait to see all the amazing things they will do as they head off to STMS.

Remember - Once a Bobcat, always a Bobcat!

Senior Walk:

Every year, graduating high school seniors return to Black Mountain to do one final lap around the school, taking the same path they did all those years ago during their final walk. All of our current bobcats come out to cheer on our Forever Bobcats.

Valedictorian Speech:
https://youtu.be/T_VHLrwEL9Y?si=HLF1bi7lYvtZSuFn
I have the honor of sharing the graduation speech from Austin Kautzman, Forever Bobcat and the 2026 CSHS Valedictorian. Watching students grow from Preschool all the way to walking across the graduation stage is one of the greatest blessings of my life. Moments like this are a true gift!!! It is a privilege to help prepare our kids for their futures while having a front row seat to the incredible people they become. I choose to stay for them!!!! I am so proud of Austin and all of our graduates!

I love our students, and it is such an honor to be part of their lives. Watching them grow, overcome challenges, laugh, learn, and become incredible young people is such a blessing. No matter how much time passes or how much they grow, they will always be part of our Bobcat family, and I will always be cheering them on.

Have a great summer!

Those Who Built and Carry On the Legacy of BMES!

Our 2nd Annual Legacy Day was truly something special! Last year, Legacy Day was simply a dream becoming reality. This year, it felt like the beginning of a tradition that will continue to grow for generations to come. It was amazing to see so many former students and staff return, and just as meaningful to welcome those who were able to attend for the very first time.

We'd love for this event to grow into something even bigger! There are still too many former students and staff we are missing, and they all deserve to be part of this celebration and this legacy.

If you have contact information for former BMES students or staff members, please email Principal Owsley: [email protected] so that he can have the opportunity to personally invite more people back next year and continue reconnecting the generations of Bobcats who helped make BMES what it is today!
