SCOTTSDALE NEIGHBORHOODS IN ACTION

The Scottsdale Neighborhoods in Action Coalition is a grass roots organization established in 2005 to specifically address the use of alcohol among youth in South Scottsdale. Current stakeholders represent the City, police officers, youth/family and diversion departments, school administrators, SPI staff, non-profit agencies, neighborhood residents as well as

faith based and the business community. All join together in SNIA to address and change community conditions regarding the high risk youth behaviors related to underage drinking, marijuana, Rx drugs, opiate use and abuse. This cooperative effort is an example of people working together with a shared vision, realizing a better community for everyone. Our Mission:
To Prevent substance abuse and related high risk behaviors by changing conditions that put children and youth at risk in the Scottsdale Community. Our Committees:

Data/Surveillance Committee: focuses on collecting, analyzing, mapping, and reporting statistical and demographic data to inform coalition members, policymakers, and District residents and to meet grant requirements. In addition, it contributes to the design and implementation of all activities sponsored by the coalition. Marketing/Education Committee: focuses on informing and instructing parents, adults, caregivers, professionals, and the community on best practices in preventing high risk behaviors among youth. Approaches may include, but are not limited to, trainings, workshops, health fairs; media outreach, distribution of tools and materials, social media, educational partnerships, and targeted campaigns. The committee also promotes strategies for empowering individuals to take action and to put information and skills learned into practice. Environment Committee: focuses on the influence of the environment (laws, policies, community norms) on substance use/abuse among youth. It recognizes the substantial influence environmental factors have in contributing to the use of alcohol by minors. It focuses on building bridges with government authorities; schools; housing, community, and advocacy organizations; tenants, landlords, and homeowners; financial institutions; and environmental experts to institute interventions and policies that result in reducing access to alcohol by youth. How can you help?
