As Young Marines, we proudly serve our communities while looking up to others who share that same commitment to service. Recently, I had the opportunity to speak with Bryton Richie, a dedicated volunteer firefighter who serves his community with pride and professionalism.
Bryton has volunteered with the Scott County Fire Department for the past five years. His passion for the fire service began at a young age, inspired by his father, who is also a firefighter. After years of watching his father serve, Bryton knew he wanted to follow a similar path. He began his journey at just 16 years old through the department’s Junior Firefighter program.
When asked what advice he would offer to those considering becoming a volunteer firefighter, Bryton emphasized the importance of starting early, staying active, and taking advantage of every opportunity to gain experience. His message highlights the value of preparation and commitment for anyone interested in serving their community.
Understanding the importance of teamwork within the Young Marines program, I asked Bryton how teamwork impacts his role as a firefighter. He explained that teamwork is essential to success in the fire service. Firefighters must build strong relationships and trust one another, as no individual can perform the job alone. This perspective closely mirrors the teamwork and unity we practice as Young Marines when working together in service of our communities.
Bryton also spoke about the rewards of volunteering. He expressed that serving others brings a strong sense of purpose, especially knowing that the community relies on firefighters during emergencies. He noted that the presence of firefighters provides reassurance and a sense of safety, and that appreciation from the community is both meaningful and motivating.
One of the most surprising insights from our conversation was that approximately 90% of the calls firefighters respond to are medical emergencies, not fires. To remain prepared for any situation, Bryton participates in regular training on a weekly and monthly basis, ensuring that he and his team are always ready to respond when needed.
In conclusion, my conversation with Bryton Richie reinforced the shared values between the fire service and the Young Marines program—teamwork, dedication, and a strong commitment to serving others. His experiences serve as an example of how individuals can make a meaningful impact in their communities. By learning from those who serve, we can continue to grow as leaders and strengthen our own commitment to helping others.
