Scott County Sheriff’s Deputy Involved in a Serious Crash while Pursuing a Fleeing Motorcycle

Scott County- On August 29th at approximately 9:13pm, a Scott County Sheriff’s Deputy was involved in a serious crash on Lovers Lane, just West of Jimtown Road in rural Scott County. The Deputy, who was airlifted to University Hospital in Louisville, was attempting to stop a motorcycle the Deputy had observed driving recklessly in the area prior to fleeing. The motorcyclist did not stop after the Deputy crashed, and their identity and whereabouts are unknown at this time. The Deputy’s condition is currently unknown, but their injuries appeared to be non-life threatening. The Deputy’s identity is not being released at this time until family notification has been made.

CITIZEN ALERT: PHONE SCAMS TARGETING SCOTT COUNTY RESIDENTS
SCOTT COUNTY, INDIANA — The Scott County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about a phone scam that is once again targeting members of our community.
Scammers are posing as Sheriff’s Office deputies and contacting residents about supposed criminal complaints, warrants, fines, or penalties. The callers then attempt to convince victims that they can avoid further legal consequences by making a payment over the phone.
DON’T FALL FOR IT — HANG UP!
Sheriff Goodin wants every Scott County resident to know:
“The Scott County Sheriff’s Office will NEVER, under my watch, call a citizen over the phone regarding a criminal complaint and ultimately offer to accept a punitive payment to satisfy the complaint.”
The Sheriff’s Office has received calls recently from community members who have either been targeted by this scam or have unfortunately fallen victim to it. These criminals are skilled at creating a sense of fear and urgency, hoping to pressure good people into making quick decisions without taking the time to verify the information.
Residents are reminded:
• The Scott County Sheriff’s Office will never demand payment over the phone to resolve a criminal complaint.
• Do not provide personal, financial, banking, or credit card information to an unsolicited caller.
• Do not allow a caller to pressure or intimidate you into making an immediate payment.
• If you receive a suspicious call claiming to be from law enforcement, hang up and independently verify the information.
• Remember that scammers may use official-sounding language, names, badge numbers, and other information to make their story appear legitimate.
Chief Deputy Guarneri emphasized the importance of remaining cautious:
“Everyone, please be careful when speaking with anyone about your business over the phone and do not fall for these scams. Criminals are sly when trying to cheat good people. Err on the side of caution — hang up the phone! Always know we are here to help you in any way we can.”
The Sheriff’s Office encourages residents to talk with family members, friends, and especially elderly relatives about these scams. A few minutes of awareness could prevent someone from suffering a significant financial loss.

Scott County Sheriff’s Deputy graduates from the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy
Scott County - On August 20th, Scott County Sheriff’s Deputy Christopher Smith graduated from the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy, concluding 16 weeks and 649 hours of law enforcement training. The academy, as known by those who have walked the hallways of the facility located in Plainfield, Indiana, is a training complex where citizens wishing to become police officers are molded into what the Indiana Law Enforcement Training Board wishes Indiana Police Officers to be…servants of the people. Long training events, followed by even longer training days, resulted in the certified police officers and deputy sheriffs graduating from the 239th session of the Law Enforcement Academy. The Mission Statement and Core Values of the Academy are as follows…MISSION: As Indiana’s center for law enforcement education, the academy sets and maintains the standard for law enforcement education. We prepare law enforcement personnel for service through continuous and innovative training guided by clear values and respect. CORE VALUES: Professionalism - Perform your job with competence and a commitment to excellence… Accountability - Take responsibility for your work and actions by living up to the highest possible standard… Inclusion - Continuously recognizing the value of everyone’s contribution to our mission… Respect - All are treated with dignity, fairness, and a sense of purpose. Deputy Smith reported for duty at the Scott County Sheriff’s Office immediately following graduation, assuming his role as the School Resource Officer (SRO) at the Vienna-Finley Elementary School. From all of us at the Sheriff’s Office and the citizens of Scott County, welcome on board, Deputy Smith!

Please join us in congratulating our very first MRT graduates!! Our IRACS team launched a new MRT class with our recovery pod. We had our first two guys complete it this week. This is exciting as it has been a long time goal to be able to facilitate an MRT group inside of the jail. MRT stands for Moral Reconation Therapy and is a systematic, cognitive behavioral treatment strategy designed to foster moral, social, and positive behavioral growth. Its primary goals are to increase moral reasoning, reduce recidivism and substance use, build self esteem and identity, improve frustration tolerance and repair relationships. These guys were the first two to start the group and throughout their time doing the steps and attending group weekly we saw a tremendous amount of growth and desire to live a better life. We are proud of you! Thank you to Scott County Indiana Sheriff's Office for always supporting not only us, but these individuals and allowing us to start this class with them. As always thank you to Mental Health America of Indiana for guidance and support that you show IRACS.
