Vigilant Citizen Provides a “Tip” after the Release of the S*x and Violent Offender Registry Video – Citizens and Deputies Keeping Scott County Safe!
Scott County- On 5-09-2026, a vigilant citizen made an anonymous report after viewing the S*x and Violent Offender Registry video recently released by the Scott County Sheriff’s Office. After verifying the information provided and confirming that the s*x offender, identified as Jonathan Daniel Cole, 38, last known address of 401 Red Oak Way, Austin, Indiana, was wanted in Scott County, Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a restaurant in Scottsburg where Cole was located and subsequently arrested. The arrest warrant, issued by the Scott Circuit Court in August 2025, revealed Cole was wanted for two (2) counts of Failure to Register as a S*x or Violent Offender.
Scott County Sheriff Jerry Goodin advised the following … “when you have an informed public, the possibilities are endless. The video, released on Friday, spoke to all of us about our responsibility in keeping our community safe…this offender undoubtedly thought he could ignore the rules of the registry. Thanks to a vigilant citizen, this offender is no longer roaming free in society based on a bad choice he made. A message to the other 23,800+ deputy citizens in Scott County, KEEP THOSE TIPS COMING!”

Keeping Scott County Safe - Educating the Offender and the Public
(A new video explaining the S*xual and Violent Offender Registry for Scott County)

Scott County- I just wanted to let our citizens know about our efforts to keep track of the s*x and violent offenders in Scott County. The attached video is another example of how Scott County is among the leaders in the State of Indiana in keeping our citizens safe. This video, which was recently made with assistance provided by the Grant County Sheriff’s Office, has been mandated by me as a required viewing by every offender on the local registry. Additionally, I feel it should be viewed by all our citizens, so we all know what the rules are for a possible neighbor or a family member who is on the registry. The registry is for both s*xual and violent offenders. Both designations, s*xual and violent offenders, are on the same registry. With that registry, Indiana State Law requires that all sheriffs’ offices check on all registered offenders at a minimum once a year, to ensure they are all complying with state law (this can be different in certain cases based upon the offender classification determined by the Indiana Department of Correction). I have directed all Scott County Sheriff’s Deputies to do s*x and violent offender checks on a non-scheduled random basis to assure none of the offenders have a temptation to think they are going to try and bend or break the rules due to their possible classification requiring a “once a year compliance check”. Your deputies check on every s*x and violent offender that is listed in Scott County, to ensure that they are living where they're supposed to be living and that they are following all the rules that have been laid out to them by the court system and by Indiana State Law. Deputy Ray Dawson is assigned full time to administer our s*xual and violent offender program, which includes supervising the registry. For clarification, there are three different registries…local, state, and federal, and sometimes they may not match.

Currently, we have seventy-five (75) registered “s*x offenders” living in Scott County. We have no violent offenders currently registered. As your sheriff, I promise you we are doing everything we can to keep our citizens safe.
