The library is one of the few places left in American public life where you're not a customer.

You're a patron. The distinction matters more than it sounds.
A customer is someone to be sold to — someone whose attention is monetized, whose behavior is tracked, whose loyalty is cultivated in service of someone else's bottom line. A patron is someone to be served. The library's entire purpose is to give you what you need — information, materials, space, assistance, community — without asking anything in return except that you treat the place with respect.

Think about how rare that actually is. Every digital space you inhabit is harvesting something from you. Every store you walk into is engineered to extract maximum spend. Even the spaces that feel free — social media, search engines, streaming platforms — are businesses built on the monetization of your attention and your data. Most of us have simply made peace with that.

The library never made that trade. It still hasn't.

It was built on a radical idea — that a community should pool its resources to ensure that every single one of its members, regardless of income or education or status, has access to the accumulated knowledge of human civilization. That idea is so old and so deeply embedded in American civic life that we've largely stopped noticing it. We walk past library buildings every day without registering what they represent.

What they represent is a deliberate rejection of the logic that everything of value must be bought and sold. A public library says: some things belong to everyone. Knowledge belongs to everyone. The freedom to read, to learn, to ask questions, to sit quietly and think — these things belong to everyone.

That model is increasingly rare. And it turns out, in a world that has thoroughly commodified almost every corner of human experience, people need it more than ever.

What does your library mean to you beyond just borrowing books?
