Scottsbluff Fire Department Scottsbluff Fire Department is a career fire department that provides fire and emergency medical services in the Panhandle of Nebraska.

Scottsbluff Fire Department is staffed with personnel 24 hours a day. The staff consists of a Fire Chief, 3 Fire Captains, 3 Fire Lieutenants, 9 Firefighters, and a Fire Prevention Officer.

We know it's Pumpkin Spice and all that's nice season, but a pumpkin spice latte isn't going to save your life. 🎃

But a smoke alarm will! Today one thing led to another. As we got done replacing a expired smoke alarm in one residence, we had occupants from nearby home ask us to check their smoke alarms, and more expired smoke alarms were located.

Here are the facts:
- Smoke alarms expire after 10 years
- When expired they may cause false alarms or may not work at all

You know you, and we know you. 👀 You hear the chirp and you remove the smoke alarm because it's 3AM and you just want to go back to bed, and then you never put it back or get a new one. But the chirp is telling you there is a problem such as a low battery, faulty smoke alarm, or it's expired.

Another helpful hint, if the smoke alarm is yellow in color, it more then likely needs replaced.

Check your smoke alarms, and replace any that are expired!

It's been a very busy week for our department. This week we had the opportunity to train along side the 72nd, 82nd, and 84th Civil Support Team, which included National Guard members from Wyoming, South Dakota, and Wyoming.

We want to once again extend a huge thank you to Skip Kelley and Legacy Coop who allowed us to utilize their facility for this exercise and provided lunch to everyone on Tuesday.

Skip Kelley is a Captain with the Gering Fire Department and was provided the opportunity to serve as the Incident Commander for the full exercise on Thursday. We want to give a shout out to Skip for his continuing support that he provides not only for his community but for our members with the City of Scottsbluff Fire Department.

Did you know your average smoke alarm is not adequate for a person who is deaf or hard of hearing?

Today we had the opportunity to work with Tiffany from the Nebraska Commission for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing to test out smoke alarms in a residence’s home who is not only hard of hearing, but is also blind.

It was a great learning experience for everyone to see how the smoke alarms integrates with the equipment to alert the occupant.

We want also want to extend a Thank You to Alarm Security Technicians for taking time out of their day to assist with testing and providing guidance on their system as well!

It may still be warm outside but winter is slowly approaching. Now is the perfect time to have furnaces checked but just as important, ensuring your Carbon Monoxide alarms are working.

Who needs a Carbon Monoxide Alarm?
- If you have a gas fired appliance such as a water heater, or furnace, or even park your vehicle in an enclosed garage, you should have one. You should also have one if you have a fire place or wood burning stove.

Do they expire?
- Yes they do. Most will expire after seven years and will require replacement.

Carbon Monoxide is a colorless, odorless gas. More than 150 people in the US die every year from accidental nonfire-related CO. It's preventable.

Yesterday, shortly after 4 PM Scottsbluff, Fire was dispatched to a medical alarm from a medical pendant showing it was activated in the 2000 block of Broadway.

Units responded and check multiple business and the area and were unable to locate a patient or anyone in distress, attempts were also made to contact the party, however those attempts were unsuccessful.

It's not uncommon for us to respond to these types of calls or accidental activation, however we also want to ensure that if someone needs medical attention we can find them.

If you know someone such as your grandparents, neighbor, employee, etc ensure they confirm with their provider that their information is up to date to include:

- Primary resident address if they have moved since purchasing the device
- Contact Number, preferably a mobile device in the event we need to get a hold of them
- Emergency Contact Number

Last but not least, if you call 911 or activate your medical pendant accidentally, please relay to dispatcher what happened, because more then likely if you don't, you'll get a visit from PD or the Fire Department to ensure everything is okay, and your neighbors will be vacuuming their lawn to see what's going on.

While you're scrolling social media, instead of working 👀....weather dependent, we are all hoping to see you at the Old West Hot Air Balloon Glow tonight at WNCC!

Couple of items though....

1) No Smoking or va**ng as there will be propane, a lot of propane. One spark or puff could lead to a incident that could of been avoided. Lets keep your hair intact, and the v**e pens, ci******es and lighters in your pocket or vehicle.

2) Pedestrian traffic is will be higher then normal in the area. Please pay attention and adhere to the direction of anyone directing traffic, and yield to those in the crosswalk.

Did you know tomorrow marks the first day for school for Scottsbluff Public Schools?

Contrary to popular belief you are not Lighting McQueen, and the roadway including school zones, are not your race track, so lets slow down. This is a great reminder for your teenage kids as well, and maybe the grandparents. The Crossing Guards, ensure you are following their traffic directions, if the stop sign is up, it means stop.

If you have kids that walk to school or ride a bike, let them know there are people that drive like Lighting McQueen, and ensure it's safe before crossing the street and that all traffic has come to a stop.

Lets stay alert, and avoid distraction. Lets have a safe school year!

What you see, is Hot Air Balloons participating in the US National Hot Air Ballooning Championships, but what we see is months of planning, payoff.

This morning crews stood by to ensure refueling of the Hot Air Balloons went off with no issues, and had the opportunity to meet some of the pilots! Rumor was, it was a beautiful morning of flying!
