If you have concerns about LB1187--the anti-brand bill--PLEASE READ THIS FROM SPEAKER JOHN ARCH...
I assure you the members of the Legislature understand and sympathize with the horrible situation our fellow Nebraskans are experiencing due to the fires. Unfortunately, the hearing on AM2503 to LB 1187 was scheduled before the tragedy unfolded in the western half of our state. I have been in multiple conversations with the chairman of the Agriculture Committee, Senator Barry DeKay regarding this issue. Senator DeKay has made the very difficult decision to continue with the hearing, given the fact there is little time remaining in this legislative session. There is absolutely no expectation that anybody should make the trip to Lincoln to testify on the amendment. To accommodate those who want to weigh in on this issue, Senator DeKay and I agree that the public comment period on this issue should be extended. Typically the deadline for online public comments is 8:00 a.m. the day of the hearing. For this situation, online public comments will be accepted until 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 21st. This will give people the opportunity to watch the hearing on the Legislature's webpage and provide comment afterwards in response to in-person testimony: https://nebraskalegislature.gov/ Senator DeKay has assured me that he will consider all comments submitted just as if they were provided in person. This is a highly unusual situation, and we are working hard to ensure the legislative process continues while still all citizens an opportunity to share their voice. My thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time.
Sincerely,
John Arch
Nebraska Legislature
