⚠️ WEATHER ALERT ⚠️

Severe storms are expected to move into our area this evening and may bring damaging winds, heavy rainfall, frequent lightning, and the potential for tornadoes.

Your Scipio-Geneva Fire Rescue encourages everyone to stay weather aware and have multiple ways to receive emergency alerts. Do not rely on outdoor warning sirens alone. Ensure your cell phone emergency alerts are enabled, have a weather radio available, and monitor trusted weather sources throughout the evening.

Take a few minutes now to review your emergency plans, charge your devices, and be prepared to seek shelter if warnings are issued.

Stay safe, and remember: when thunder roars, go indoors.

🚒 Scipio-Geneva Fire Rescue

The severe weather threat continues to shape up as expected. The rain currently moving through Indiana has stalled the warm front / storm fuel to where it sits just north of I-70 in central Indiana as of 4pm ET.

Rapid atmospheric recovery (rapidly building storm fuel) is now underway across Illinois behind the rain, which is allowing for unstable air to build in quickly for anywhere south of the warm front. So with that said, we anticipate the severe threat to continue this evening, just slightly shifted to the south.

The map below is the latest update from the Storm Prediction Center at 4pm, which we agree with wholeheartedly. This highlights where we think the best risk area is now currently shaping up. This area is roughly along I-74 and I-70 areas from Perrysville, down to Vincennes and east over to Indianapolis, Columbus and Bloomington areas.

Regardless, the ENTIRE STATE still has a risk for severe weather this evening, it just evidently clearer in the red zone.

The risk for significant severe weather continues with strong to intense tornadoes possible, damaging wind to 75+mph, and large up up to 2” in diameter.

Our live coverage is planned for 5pm ET but we may delay it slightly as storms are just starting to form in Illinois.

🔥Monthly Training Night 🔥

Yesterday, your Scipio-Geneva Firefighters conducted their monthly training. Members met at the station before responding to a local residence to conduct a controlled burn of a brush pile.

This training provided newer members with valuable hands-on experience, including operating emergency vehicles and learning how to run the pumps on our apparatus. Upon arrival, firefighters first soaked the surrounding area to help prevent the fire from spreading before safely igniting and monitoring the burn.

At Scipio-Geneva Fire Rescue, we continually train to improve our skills and better serve both our community and our members. Training like this helps ensure we are prepared for the next emergency when the call comes in.

Do you have a brush pile you've been wanting to burn but don't have access to a water source? Send us a message through our page to see if we can help. Small donations go a long way in supporting your volunteer fire department and helping us continue serving our community.

🚒 Tonight, your Scipio-Geneva Firefighters are at the Jennings County Fair providing fire coverage during the tractor pulls in the grandstands.

While several of our members are on duty at the fairgrounds, we remain fully capable of responding to emergencies throughout our district. Additional firefighters are available and on standby at home to ensure that any calls for service receive a prompt response.

We hope everyone enjoys a safe and fun evening at the fair. If you're attending the tractor pulls, please be mindful of your surroundings and follow all event safety guidelines.

🚒 Brush Fire Response – Scipio-Geneva Fire Rescue 🚒

This morning, just after 11:00 AM, Scipio-Geneva Fire Rescue was dispatched to a brush fire that had spread beyond the homeowner's intended burn area. Brush-21, Tanker-21, and Engine-22 responded to the scene.

The homeowner had been burning brush from dead trees and was attempting to prevent the fire from spreading into a nearby wooded area. Although a water hose was available on scene, the fire had grown significantly due to the amount of fuel involved. Fire personnel quickly worked to contain and extinguish the fire before it could spread further.

Members of Scipio-Geneva Fire Rescue will be returning in the coming weeks to assist with a planned controlled burn under safer and more controlled conditions.

As a reminder, always use caution when conducting any outdoor burning, and ensure adequate resources are available before igniting a fire.
