Newsletter Update: Electrical Department

Summer can bring a variety of weather, from tornadoes and thunderstorms to wind shears and flash flooding. Severe weather can change rapidly and have ramifications on our electric system.

If you own a generator, make sure it is rated for what you will be using it for. If you own a portable generator, donโ€™t connect it to your home electric system. You can run outdoor rated extension cords and plug them directly into the generator outlets. Keep the generator outside and away from your building, windows and doors so exhaust doesnโ€™t enter your building. If you have a stationary generator, make sure a qualified electrician installs a proper UL listed transfer switch to prevent back feed onto our system where personnel are working.

If there are downed power lines outside your home or on the street, always consider them energized until our Electric Department comes and verifies they are safe. If you see downed wires, or if the storm has any of your electric service damaged, contact the Borough Office at 570-385-2841. After hours call our police station at 570-385-9111 or call 911 if it is an emergency. They will notify the proper people.

Newsletter Update: Wastewater Treatment Plant

If April showers bring May flowers, then what do May flowers bring? Pilgrims! I know this joke may not be the best; but, itโ€™s a classic for this time of year.

When working in the wastewater industry, you need to have a sense of humor. The conditions that we work in are less than ideal for most people. It can even turn our stomachs at times. Having a good sense of humor can help trick the mind into blocking out some of the sights and odors we experience. Having a good surplus of jokes can really lighten the mood in bad situations.

During the spring and summer, we can experience a lot of rainstorms. Some storms are minor, but some can really do some harm. One or two inches of rain can really cause a lot of issues to our treatment facility. One of our worst enemies is something called I&I โ€“ Inflow & Infiltration. Infiltration is something that we must handle ourselves for the most part. This is where water weeps into our system. This is typically when ground water rises and gets into a broken sewer line or leaks into a manhole. Inflow is something that all residents can help prevent. Having your gutter system or any sort of sump pump tied into a sewer line are examples of inflow โ€“ a direct discharge into the sewer system. Yes, this is an easy way to get water away from your foundation, but it is also prohibited according to Borough Zoning regulations. If your home or apartment is doing this, please remedy this issue immediately. For answers to any questions, please contact the Borough Office.

I hope everyone can get out and enjoy the nice weather on its way. Be safe and have fun!

I leave you with one final joke, what is a wastewater operatorโ€™s favorite type of dog? Answer: A poo-dle!
