Did you have any costumes to wear growing up?

One subject recalled, "Because of my interest in cowboys, I was elated when my parents gave me cowboy boots with real spurs at Christmas. I began wearing them to school every day, despite the teacher urging me to stop because I tripped over the spurs when walking backwards in a skit. Later, when the principal saw me tinkering with the bars under the lunchroom tables with my spurs, he informed me the spurs were against school policy. Much to my disappointment, I removed the spurs, but I still wore my boots daily."

What simple ways did you pass the time as a child?

One subject recalled, "I occupied my time with my siblings or neighbors, playing dodgeball or chase, setting up tents, swinging on the swing set, sliding, or climbing the hackberry tree onto the garage roof. We’d put sticks across the tree’s roots, forming makeshift forts and log cabin structures, complete with toy army men. One of our favorite games was aptly called 'Run from Martin,' and it was played by look- ing through the piers under the house, tracking our baby brother’s location, and running away from him as he tried to join us. Once my parents gave me a Western Flyer bicycle, I began riding with other neighborhood kids."
