โ˜€๏ธ Stay Cool, Schoharie County! โ˜€๏ธ

With high temperatures approaching, the Schoharie County Department of Health wants everyone to stay safe. If you need a break from the heat, cooling centers are available throughout the county.

Heat can be dangerous for anyone, but it can be especially hard on older adults, young children, people with health conditions, and those without air conditioning. Spending even a short time in a cool, air-conditioned place can help your body stay healthy.

๐Ÿ’ง Simple Ways to Stay Safe in the Heat:
โ€ข Drink plenty of water throughout the day
โ€ข Stay in air-conditioned places when you can
โ€ข Wear light-colored, lightweight clothing
โ€ข Take breaks in the shade if you're outside
โ€ข Check on friends, family members, and neighbors

โš ๏ธ Watch for signs of heat illness, such as:
โ€ข Heavy sweating
โ€ข Headache
โ€ข Dizziness
โ€ข Nausea
โ€ข Muscle cramps
โ€ข Confusion or fainting

If someone is showing signs of confusion, loses consciousness, or shows signs of heat stroke, call 911 right away.

Please see the flyer below for cooling center locations and hours.

What a fun day! โ˜€๏ธ

On Monday, the Schoharie County Department of Health spent the day at the Cobleskill-Richmondville Central School District 7th Grade Fun Day, and even with the heat, the students made the most of every minute, and so did we!

Inside the school, our Community Health team, Megan and Jenna, talked with students about e-cigarette prevention and handed out educational materials, stickers, and, of course, fidgets!

Outside, our Environmental Health team, Joe and Kelsey, spent time with students sharing information about environmental health and the important work their program does throughout the community.

A big thank you to the Schoharie County Youth Bureau for putting together another amazing end-of-year event for our local 7th graders. We look forward to being part of such a fun day each year!

The Schoharie County Department of Health has recently received questions from community members following media coverage about Ebola. At this time, there are NO known Ebola cases in Schoharie County, and the risk to the public remains VERY LOW.

This post is being shared to help inform our community, answer questions, and reduce misinformation; not to cause fear or alarm.

Ebola is a rare but serious illness that spreads through direct contact with the blood or body fluids of someone who is sick with Ebola. It is NOT spread through the air, water, or food.

Symptoms may include:
โ€ข Fever
โ€ข Headache
โ€ข Muscle pain
โ€ข Vomiting or diarrhea
โ€ข Unusual bleeding or bruising

People at higher risk include those who:
โ€ข Recently traveled to areas with Ebola outbreaks
โ€ข Had direct contact with someone with Ebola
โ€ข Worked closely with Ebola patients in healthcare settings

For most Schoharie County residents, the risk remains extremely low.

To help protect yourself and others:
โ€ข Wash your hands often
โ€ข Avoid contact with blood and bodily fluids
โ€ข Follow travel advisories for affected countries

Contact a doctor right away if you develop symptoms after traveling to an affected area or after close contact with someone who has Ebola. Call before going to a doctorโ€™s office or hospital.

Health officials continue to monitor the situation closely and will provide updates if needed.

Stay informed, stay calm, and continue using trusted health information sources such as the New York State Department of Health and the CDC.

Any questions can be sent to [email protected], or call us at (518) 295-8365.

05/08/2026

Due to recent news coverage about hantavirus, the Schoharie County Department of Health would like to share important information from the CDC to help keep our community informed.

Hantaviruses are viruses spread by rodents like mice and rats. People can become exposed through rodent urine, droppings, or saliva. Exposure most often happens while cleaning places where rodents have been living, such as homes, sheds, garages, barns, basements, campers, and cabins.

The Andes virus is the only type of hantavirus known to spread from person to person. This is very rare and usually only happens with close contact with someone who is sick.

Symptoms usually appear 1 to 8 weeks after exposure and may include:
โ€ข Fever
โ€ข Feeling very tired
โ€ข Muscle aches, especially in the back, hips, shoulders, and thighs
โ€ข Headache
โ€ข Chills
โ€ข Dizziness
โ€ข Nausea or stomach pain

Early symptoms can feel similar to the flu, but there are some differences:
โ€ข The flu usually starts within 1โ€“4 days after exposure. Hantavirus symptoms may take 1โ€“8 weeks to appear after rodent exposure.
โ€ข Severe coughing or trouble breathing may be a sign of Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome (HPS).
โ€ข Doctors can order blood tests for hantavirus if rodent exposure is mentioned.

To help lower your risk:
โ€ข Seal holes and cracks in your home or garage
โ€ข Safely clean rodent droppings and nests
โ€ข Place traps in and around your home to help reduce rodents.

There is no specific cure for hantavirus disease, but early medical care can greatly improve recovery. If you feel sick after possible rodent exposure, contact a healthcare provider right away and mention the exposure.

โ€ผ๏ธPlease note that Central NY (Schoharie County area) is ๐๐Ž๐“ considered a risk for the current outbreak.
