VILLAGE OF SCHILLER PARK SOCIAL MEDIA POLICY

A. PURPOSE
The use of social media accounts by the Village of Schiller Park, Cook County, Illinois (the “Village”) is for the purpose of obtaining or conveying information that is useful to or will further the goals of the Village, and increase communication between the Village and the communit
y. Social media accounts have been created by the Village to communicate Village news, services, and events, and to engage with residents, visitors, media, local business owners and people who work in the Village on those topics. COMMENTS AND CONTENT RESTRICTIONS
The Village’s social media accounts are limited public forums. The Village does not make its social media sites available for general public discourse, but rather reserves and limits the topics that may be discussed on its social media accounts. The Village reserves the right to restrict or remove from its social media accounts any comment or content that violates this Social Media Policy. Comments or content (including acronyms, abbreviations, or symbols) containing any of the following shall not be allowed for posting and shall be subject to removal.
1. Slanderous, libelous, malicious, offensive, threatening, profane, uncivil, defamatory, or insulting comments or content;
2. Personal attacks, threats, harassment or advocating the harassment of another person, or hate speech;
3. Comments or content that promotes, fosters, or perpetuates discrimination on the basis of race, creed, color, age, religion, gender, gender identity or expression, marital status, status with regard to public assistance, national origin, physical or mental disability, sexual orientation or sexual preference, pregnancy, childbirth or any medical condition related to pregnancy or childbirth, genetic information, ancestry, arrest record, military status, unfavorable discharge from military service, order of protection status, citizenship status, or any other classification or protected category as defined by applicable law;
4. Advertisements, solicitations, spam, links to other websites or social media, or promotions of any kind for individuals, businesses, nonprofits and organizations;
5. Obscene, vulgar, graphic, or sexually explicit comments or content or links to sexual content;
6. Comments or content unrelated to the topical scope of the page;
7. Information containing personally identifiable information, including but not limited to a home address, personal phone number, Social Security number, birthdate, or medical information;
8. Comments that represent a person other than the person posting the comment;
9. Information that may interfere with or compromise police investigations, police tactics and/or the safety or security of the public or public infrastructure or systems;
10. Comments or content in support of, or in opposition to, any political campaign, candidate, or ballot measure;
11. Content that infringes on copyrights, patents, service marks, trade secrets, trademarks, or other proprietary rights of any other party, without the express permission of the owner;
12. Comments or content that promotes, encourages, or otherwise advocates illegal activity;
13. Comments or content that promotes or denigrates religion, atheism, or any spiritual belief;
14. Comments or content in violation of any federal, state, or local law. NOTICE
The Village’s social media accounts are not constantly monitored. The Village’s social media accounts should never be used to report a crime or submit a request for police assistance. If you have a question or concern that requires attention from a Village representative, please call the Village Hall at 847-678-2550 during normal business hours. The Village reserves the right to update this Social Media Policy at any time. The Village neither warrants nor makes representations or endorsements as to the quality, content, suitability, accuracy or completeness of any information, text, image, video, graphic, hyperlink or other item contained on any social media account’s server or any other server or any comment posted by a commentator. Such materials are subject to change without notice. The Village’s predominant Internet presence is the Village’s official website at www.villageofschillerpark.com. No other website or social media account shall characterize itself as such. Except to the extent required by law, communications made through and comments made on this site shall in no way be deemed to constitute legal notice to the Village or any of its officers, officials, employees, agents, or representatives with respect to any claim or cause of action. The Village may deny access to users who violate this Social Media Policy, at any time and without prior notice. Users are subject to the terms of service for the applicable social media site, and the Village reserves the right to report any violation to the social media site in question with the intent of the site’s administrators taking appropriate and reasonable responsive action. The Village assumes no responsibility for any removal of content pursuant to internal policies of the company owning or controlling the social media site. Users participate at their own risk and assume personal responsibility for their comments, username, and any information provided. By posting a comment a user agrees to the terms, conditions and requirements stated in this Social Media Policy.
