Westchester Cadet Squadron 1, Civil Air Patrol

Westchester Cadet Squadron 1, Civil Air Patrol Air Force. We also participate in emergency services training, search and rescue exercises, orientation flights, and disaster relief.

The Civil Air Patrol was founded in December 1941, one week before the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, by over 150,000 citizens concerned about the defense of America's coastline. Flying under the jurisdiction of the Army Air Forces, CAP pilots flew over one-half million hours, were credited with sinking two enemy submarines and rescued hundreds of crash survivors during World War II. On July 1,

1946, President Truman established CAP as a federally chartered benevolent civilian corporation, and Congress passed Public Law 557 on May 26, 1948, which made CAP the auxiliary of the new U.S. The Westchester Cadet Squadron takes part in many volunteer community activities, such as the Towers to Tunnels run in NYC, Veterans' day events, many parades, and other volunteer events. We participate in military demonstrations as well, and being a cadet in CAP looks great if someone is looking to enlist. However, there is no obligation to be a part of our military. The skills
a cadet will learn, however, in leadership and followership, will be useful throughout their entire lives, military or not. Westchester Cadet Squadron 1 (WCS) meets on a weekly basis, with weekly meetings lasting approximately 2 hours. The Westchester Cadet Squadron is part of the Southeastern Group of the New York Wing. The New York Wing (NYW) holds an annual Encampment for the Cadet members where for 1 week Cadets teach Cadets about Drill, Leadership and Teamwork under the mentorship of the Senior (adult) members. NYW also holds a Flight Academy for Cadets to learn to fly either a powered aircraft or a glider. There are also Regional and National activities that cadets can participate in.

One of the main reasons why Harry and I stayed in CAP long after Amanda became Senior Member is because of the unique opportunities of being able to mold young minds. We have had the absolute honor of seeing the first 5 cadets, since 1974, accepted into & graduate (or soon to graduate) from the U.S. Air Force Academy (one even went on to graduate from Uniformed Services University is currently completing HER residency in general surgery! Two have become pilots & one will go USAF Jag & another AE Engineer/Pilot!), others go on to and graduate from USAF ROTC, one who joined the U.S. Space Force, after being accepted into the USU in their coveted Physical Therapy school, others go to prestigious universities, & others join United States Air Force and USMC Museum Parris Island, and yes, U.S. Army. It is something to see; having a timid teenager walk through our doors & seeing them leave standing taller, their head held high & with a path before them. Always a daredevil & not shying of trying everything, Arielle joined as soon as she turned 12 & took off running. To say that this young lady has made "mamabear" and "papabear" and The General (her bff) proud is an understatement. Harry & I have always given back, been faithful civil servants, & always in a field that puts us in a position to help and protect others. Never have we known of a volunteer organization that gives so much back to the community, that has the opportunity to shape young minds and teach discipline and character (sorry Girl Scouts, being very honest here) the way Civil Air Patrol does! We are so happy for you, C/Colonel Arielle Nickerson, New York Wing, Civil Air Patrol youngest Spaatz Cadet (15 y 3 m), and one of a very few who accomplished this award so young (additionally, only .0.05% of cadets earn their pinnicale award)! Our Westchester Cadet Squadron 1, Civil Air Patrol Spaatz number is now : 5! The first one was in 2018 (our sqd was founded in 1962 by NYWG's first ever Spaatz Cadet and first Cadet of the year, our very own Lt Col Thomas Vreeland)! EXCELSIOR!

Special thanks to her parents, Lt Kira Aksakalova, Maj Brian Nickerson, And her brother Dalton Wraith, USAF. Of couse Col Vreeland for his mentorship and encouragement and Capt Jennifer Moon, CC, for her dedication success and perseverance!

We are over the MOON about NY048’s third CADET WINGS graduate, C/Capt. Joseph Villanueva! Since joining CAP in 2019, C/Capt. Villanueva was determined to earn his PPL. Despite several setbacks beyond his control - including a global pandemic - he never wavered from his dream. It has been our honor and a privilege to be a part of this outstanding cadet’s journey. Please join me in congratulating CAP Cadet WINGS graduate #273.

Please join me in congratulating NY048’s newest C/Lt. Col! Since joining Westchester Cadet Squadron 1 - just three days after celebrating her 12th birthday - C/Lt. Col. Arielle Nickerson has become the youngest cadet in our squadron’s 56 yr history to earn the General Ira C. Eaker Award - #4246! It has taken planning, dedication, hard work and sacrifice to reach this incredible milestone.

The General Ira C. Eaker Award marks completion of Phase IV of the CAP Cadet Program. Once a cadet earns the Eaker Award, he or she is promoted to the grade of cadet lieutenant colonel and is challenged to lead and serve junior-ranking cadets not just in the hometown squadron but around their wing as well. Congratulations C/Lt. Nickerson!! EXCELSIOR!!!

Happy birthday to our Total Force partner, the United States Air Force. On this day in 1947, President Harry S. Truman signed the National Security Act, which created the Air Force as an independent military branch equal to the Army and Navy.
