Don't be fooled—docking is a high-risk time for accidents. A sudden gust or slippery surface can send you into the water unexpectedly. Always keep your life jacket on when docking or moving between your boat and the shore. It's not worth the risk!

Good feedback!!

Marine flares expire 42 months from the manufacture date. Check your safety gear before boating season, and safely dispose of expired and used flares at Expired Marine Flare Disposal Day on Saturday, April 11.

You can drop of flares from 9am to 1pm at Hamilton Marine in Kittery, Portland, Rockland, and Searsport.

Can't make it to disposal day? Disposing of flares in household trash can be dangerous and setting off old flares can result in false distress reports. Instead, contact your local police or fire department to inquire about safe disposal.

Effective January 1, 2026, children 12 years of age or younger, including a boat operator who is 12 years of age or younger, must wear a United States Coast Guard approved personal flotation device (PFD) while on any watercraft that is underway and being used for recreational purposes. Exceptions to this requirement include if the child is below the decks, in an enclosed cabin or if the watercraft has a USCG certificate of inspection.

This change, initiated and passed by the Maine State Legislature, increased the required age from 10 years of age or younger to 12 years of age or younger to improve youth safety on Maine's waters. The updated age requirement now aligns with federal law.
