The annual Snow Goose migration at Middle Creek never fails to leave me in awe.
I spent two days there at the end of February, watching wave after wave of birds descend onto the lake — a living blizzard of white wings against the winter sky. The numbers were staggering, easily tens of thousands, and when they lifted off all at once it felt like the entire landscape shifted. A wall of feathers, sound, and motion rising straight off the water.
Every so often, a Bald Eagle would glide overhead, and the whole flock would erupt in a single explosive lift‑off — a survival instinct triggered in an instant. The lake was still mostly frozen, with only a small opening of water, and that narrow patch became the center of all this energy as the geese fed, rested, and regrouped.
It’s impossible to grasp the scale of this migration until you stand there and feel it — the roar of wings, the vibration in your chest, the sky literally filling with life. Middle Creek is just one stop on their long journey north, a brief pause before they continue toward the Arctic, farther than any other bird travels to breed. Their arrival is one of the clearest signs that spring is pushing its way back into Pennsylvania.
If you’ve never witnessed this spectacle, put it on your list. Photos can show the beauty, but the experience… that’s something you carry with you.

These photos were captured on February 27, 2026.

Spring at Raystown Lake always begins with a familiar voice.
As the days lengthen and the marsh edges soften, the Killdeer return to their nesting grounds just as they do every year. Their sharp, ringing calls echo across the wetlands from dawn until dusk, a soundtrack that tells you the season has truly turned.
Right now, the first nests are already appearing in the places only a Killdeer would choose — gravel patches warmed by the sun, open stretches near the marsh, and the quiet edges of parking lots where their speckled eggs blend perfectly with the stones. The adults stand watch with that bold confidence they’re known for, calling out warnings and performing their dramatic “broken‑wing” display whenever anything wanders too close.
For me, this is one of the most exciting transitions of the year at Raystown. The marsh comes alive, insects begin to stir, and the Killdeer are among the first to claim their space in the changing landscape. Photographing them feels like capturing the opening chapter of spring — a reminder that the lake is waking up, and life is already in motion.

My first encounter with a skunk. Walked right to me and laid down, like it wanted me to pet it. I walked to within 10' of it to get this shot with my phone. It never made a move, and remained there as I walked away.

So I am sharing these again from the morning of January 20, 2026, because it is happening again right now, and the camera is rolling. To see it with the naked eye, you will need to be some place dark, and it will not look as brilliant as these photos, though seriously the coolest thing to see happening in a dark location and super clear sky's. I am hoping to run a camera all night. So expect new photos and enjoy looking at these. Thank you for following along.
