September 11, 2001—a day that changed our country, our fire service, and countless lives forever.

Twenty-five years ago, America came under attack. The Twin Towers in New York City, the Pentagon in Washington, D.C., and a field in rural Pennsylvania became sacred ground.

Nearly 3,000 innocent people lost their lives that day. Among them were hundreds of firefighters, police officers, EMS personnel, and other first responders who did what they had sworn to do—they answered the call.

When the towers were struck, firefighters ran toward danger while thousands of others were desperately trying to escape it. They climbed stairwells carrying heavy equipment, searching for victims, helping the injured, and refusing to leave others behind. Many knew the dangers they faced, but their commitment to protecting others was stronger than their concern for themselves.

343 FDNY firefighters made the ultimate sacrifice.

They were fathers, mothers, sons, daughters, husbands, wives, friends, and brothers and sisters of the fire service. They were ordinary people who performed an extraordinary duty on an unimaginable day.

For those of us who wear the uniform and answer the call today, September 11 is more than a date in history. It is a reminder of the responsibility that comes with serving our communities. It is a reminder of the courage, brotherhood, and sacrifice that define the fire service.

This year, on the 25th anniversary of the attacks of September 11, 2001, the Saxonburg Volunteer Fire Company was honored to participate in the memorial service held at Saxonburg VFW Post 7376.

Today, we remember every innocent life that was taken. We remember every firefighter, police officer, EMS provider, and first responder who made the ultimate sacrifice. And we remember the promise our nation made in the days that followed:

We will never forget.

May we always honor their sacrifice. May we always remember their courage. And may we continue to answer the call with the same dedication to our communities and to one another.

Never Forget. 🇺🇸🚒
