Today, on the September 11 National Day of Service and Remembrance, we pause to honor the lives lost and recognize the power of serving others.
At Senior Citizens Inc., we are deeply grateful for the volunteers who give their time, compassion, and talents to support our mission of helping people age successfully.
One of those remarkable volunteers is Stephon, an AmeriCorps Seniors Senior Companion at the Ruth Byck Adult Day Health Center.
When Senior Companion Stephon noticed a new client at the Ruth Byck Adult Day Health Center, he quickly realized she spoke only Spanish.
Despite everyone’s efforts, the language barrier left her sitting quietly each day—watching others connect, but unable to join in. One day, as Stephon set up a domino table, he noticed her watching. With a warm smile, he pointed to the chair beside him and invited her to join.
She paused, smiled, and said, “sí.”
That one word changed everything. As they played, Stephon discovered she was excellent at the game. What began as a simple invitation became confidence and connection. Soon she was smiling, laughing, and engaging with those around her. The room that once felt unfamiliar became a place where she belonged.
Through one thoughtful gesture, Stephon didn’t just invite her into a game. He reminded her she was seen. He helped her feel included. He gave her joy.
His service created a connection that day and every day since.
On this National Day of Service, we honor Stephon—and every volunteer who helps make moments of connection, dignity, and joy possible throughout our community.
Thank you for serving. Thank you for caring. Thank you for making a difference.
