For 251 years, America's Army has stood ready to protect the nation and its people and will fight to defend its values. Since its official establishment, June 14, 1775 — more than a year before the Declaration of Independence — the U.S. Army has played a vital role in the growth and development of the American nation.

Day use fees waived at recreation areas June 16 for Corps’ birthday

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will waive day use fees at its more than 2,800 USACE-operated recreation areas nationwide in observance of its birthday, June 16, 2026.

The waiver covers day use fees at Hartwell and J. Strom Thurmond Lake recreation areas (operated by the Savannah District). The waived fees are for boat launch ramps and swimming beaches.

The waiver does not apply to camping and camping-related services, or fees for specialized facilities (group picnic shelters) and events. Other agencies that manage recreation areas on USACE lands are encouraged, but not required, to offer the waiver in the areas that they manage.

May 31 is National Dam Safety Awareness Day commemorating the failure of the South Fork Dam in Johnstown, Pennsylvania in 1889, resulting in the loss of life of 2,220 people.

Dams play a crucial role in managing water for flood risk, power generation, environmental conservation, and recreation, but none are risk free.

Dam safety programs, like the one from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, help federal, state, and local stakeholders responsible for dams monitor them and follow best safety practices.
