Saturday, September 12 is Make a Difference Day, Sausalito's citywide day of volunteer service and a day when community organizations and neighbors come together to tend to and care for the places we all share. This is an opportunity to connect with community, give back, build friendships, and make a meaningful impact through collaborative volunteering.

Community members can volunteer on a variety of projects throughout Sausalito, including:
- Cleaning up the Litho Street Mural
- Painting City Hall's stairs
- Dusting library bookshelves
- Gardening at the Ferry Plaza, Gabrielson Park's Rose Garden, or Robin Sweeney Park
- Donating Books at Sausalito Books by the Bay's Children's book drive.

There will also be a 2 p.m. “Reverse Tashlich” beach cleanup at Dunphy Park to honor Rosh Hashanah and provide inclusive service opportunities for the broader community. Learn more on the Make a Difference Day website: https://makeadifferencesausalito.org/

Statement from Mayor Steven Woodside regarding the resignation of Elaine Forbes on September 1, 2026:

“Elaine Forbes has resigned from her position as City Manager. We have accepted her resignation, and she is no longer employed by the City.

Our hearts are with Elaine and her family, and we stand behind her as she takes this time to focus on her health and healing.

I want to thank the people of Sausalito for your sympathy and for your patience during this time. This was an extremely sensitive matter, and I am grateful for the respect and compassion you have shown to Elaine and her family. It is very much appreciated.

The council has, in closed session, unanimously agreed to appoint Brandon Phipps as the Interim City Manager for the next six months. Given the fact that we are in an election season and there perhaps will be some change in council going forward in the next year, it is anticipated that there will be a recruitment, and we would hope that Mr. Phipps would be a candidate. We will be returning at the next meeting, we hope, with a formal contract to that effect.”

In the early morning hours of Saturday, August 15, 2026, Sausalito Police officers responded to a report of an altercation in the 2900 block of Bridgeway. According to the reporting party, a confrontation occurred involving other individuals, during which a firearm was displayed and a shot was fired but nobody was injured. The suspects fled the area in a vehicle.

Responding officers were able to locate a vehicle matching the description shortly afterward and conducted a traffic stop. The occupants of the vehicle were detained, and a subsequent search led to the recovery of a loaded firearm inside the vehicle. A male juvenile and female adult were arrested for weapons related charges.

The investigation into this incident remains active and ongoing. At this time, the incident appears to be isolated in nature, and there is no indication of an ongoing threat to public safety. No injuries were reported in connection with this incident.

During this call the SPD received mutual aid assistance from the Marin County Sherriff and Mill Valley PD to assist with this call and maintain routine calls for service.

Sausalito’s new drive-up USPS mailbox has arrived in the City Hall parking lot! 📬

The parking lot is located off Bee Street, between Bonita and Caledonia streets.

The new mailbox allows residents to mail letters and other eligible mail without leaving their vehicles, improving accessibility for seniors and people with disabilities. It also provides a convenient option for anyone who prefers or needs to access postal services from their car.

Our thoughts are with Elaine and her family. She remains on a leave of absence while we evaluate the facts surrounding the matter.

Statement from the City of Sausalito: Sausalito City Manager Elaine Forbes Arrested While on Leave: City Manager Elaine Forbes Arrested While on Leave.

Sausalito City Manager Elaine Forbes has been arrested in Sausalito while on a leave of absence.

Forbes was taken into custody at 6:50 am Saturday morning in Sausalito. She was booked on criminal charges.

This is a difficult development for our City staff and our community. Because this is now an active and ongoing investigation by the Marin County Sheriff’s Office, the City will not comment on the specific allegations. For additional information, please contact the Marin County Sheriff’s Office.

Previously, on Thursday, July 16, the Sausalito City Council met in closed session to approve a leave of absence for Forbes. The work of the City of Sausalito continues without interruption under the leadership of Acting City Manager Brandon Phipps and our dedicated municipal staff. It is anticipated the City Council will discuss next steps at its upcoming City Council meeting.
