October 2026: Substance Misuse Prevention Month and Youth Substance Use Prevention Month
October 01, 2026

"WHEREAS, substance misuse has a profound effect on individuals, families and communities, including physical and mental health, social isolation, financial strain, emotional toll, health care burden, and economic impact; and,

WHEREAS, substance misuse costs the nation hundreds of billions of dollars each year, according to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, prevention has the potential to reduce those costs dramatically; and,

WHEREAS, during this month, we join with the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services to ask parents, siblings, friends, neighbors, teachers, community members, government agencies, public and private institutions, prevention providers and more to share information, promote healthy lifestyles and help transform lives through evidence-based substance use prevention;

It's Mental Health Awareness Week. It's time to raise awareness, support and educate. Mental health issues are real, even for our youth:
"Mental health is an important part of adolescents' overall health and well-being. Poor mental health can affect learning, behavior, relationships, and school engagement. Strong connections with adults and peers at home, school, and in the community can help adolescents feel supported and reduce risks like substance use and violence."
https://www.cdc.gov/yrbs/youth-health-in-focus/mental-health.html
As a community, we can help our youth potentially avoid many of the risk factors associated with mental and behavioral health issues by implementing protective factors through tested and effective programs in our schools and throughout our community. This is the mission of the Communities That Care. We as a community can make a difference.
