Tomorrow marks 25 years since the day our nation was changed forever. On September 11, 2001, I was on duty here at the Sauk Village Fire Department as a Lieutenant/Paramedic when the terrorist attacks unfolded before our eyes. Like so many others in the fire service, I watched in disbelief as thousands of innocent lives were taken and countless families were forever changed.

We remember the 2,977 souls lost that day โ€” especially the 343 FDNY firefighters who climbed those stairs with courage that words can never fully capture. We also honor the firefighters who continue to pass away even now from illnesses caused by working in the dust and rubble. Their sacrifice did not end on 9/11, and we will never forget them.

But even in the midst of unimaginable tragedy, there was extraordinary heroism. It is estimated that 10,000 to 14,000 people were rescued and evacuated from the World Trade Center before the towers collapsed โ€” the largest and most successful rescue operation in history. Those lives were saved because firefighters, police officers, and everyday citizens refused to give up.

As we observe the 25th anniversary tomorrow, I ask everyone to take a moment to honor those we lost, those we saved, and those who continue to serve. May we never forget the bravery, the sacrifice, and the unity that carried us through one of the darkest days in our nationโ€™s history.

We will never forget.

Sauk Village Fire Department โ€“ Official Update - Car Fire Route 394

Earlier today, the Sauk Village Fire Department responded to a vehicle fire in the southbound lanes of Route 394. Crews arrived to find a heavily involved vehicle fire and did a really great job, working quickly to extinguish the fire and ensure the safety of everyone on scene.

We appreciate the patience of all motorists who were delayed while firefighters operated on the roadway. For the safety of our personnel and the public, traffic must be stopped during incidents like this due to heat, smoke, and the close proximity of fire apparatus and hose lines.

While most drivers were understanding, we did experience one individual who expressed frustration about the roadway closure. We want to remind everyone that these measures are in place solely to protect lives, including yours. Our firefighters cannot safely work inches from moving vehicles at highway speeds.

Thank you again to our community for your cooperation and support.

Good Evening, Sauk Village Residents,

During these trying times, the Sauk Village Fire Department remains committed to doing everything we can to meet the needs of our residents and those who may be visiting our community.

Effective immediately, the Sauk Village Fire Department will serve as both a Cooling Center and Electronic Device Charging Station from 7:00 AM until 9:00 PM daily, as staffing allows.
Residents are welcome to come to the fire station to cool down and charge essential electronic devices, including cell phones, tablets, and other small electronics.

We ask that you remain with your devices at all times while they are charging. The Fire Department cannot be responsible for devices that are left unattended.

Please understand that the 9:00 PM closing time is necessary to allow our firefighters and staff the opportunity to get the proper rest needed to remain ready to respond to emergencies throughout our community.

Even while providing these additional services, our primary responsibility remains emergency response and protecting the lives and property of those we serve.

We appreciate everyone's patience, cooperation, and understanding as our community works through these challenging conditions. We are here for you, Sauk Village.

Duty First. Honor Always.

As always, stay safe and God bless.
